ENGLISH REVIEW

Had this book only contained the interviews without the inclusion  of clinical or psychological of documents and studies, this would have been a five-star read. However, I have to say that I feel this is a great book for people curious about the subject with little knowledge going in. Coupled with a comprehensive glossary and explanations throughout each chapter, I believe it would be a good starting point for such readers.

Even I, being cisgender, cringed at some of the statements made regarding psychiatric disorders and trans identity being closely linked to autism, more so because the study in question is dated and didn’t actually arrive to a definite and fact-based conclusion.
Nevertheless, the testimonies felt so true and sincere that I feel the purpose of this book was fulfilled, which is to make trans voices heard, figuratively speaking.

The Complete Masters of the Poster

I have always loved Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's work ever since we studied him in Elementary -primary- School. However, I have to confess I had no idea that there was such a thing as 'Masters of the Poster' until I came across this book. I immediately applied in the hope I would get the opportunity to review it and here I am.
Surprisingly, Toulouse-Lautrec is my favorite artist from that period and style no more, because thanks to this publication I was able to discover some of my new favorite 'Masters', such as Chéret, Grasset, de Feure, Mucha, Steinlen, The Beggarstaffs, Roedel and Berthon (in that order.)
This book is essential for everyone; from the lay person like me that likes -or is interested in- the period and style to the collector, because this publication's design allows for the works to be fully appreciated in their entirety.

Admiro el trabajo de Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec desde que lo estudiamos en la primaria. Sin embargo, debo confesar que no tenía la menor idea de la existencia de "Los maestros del Cartel" hasta que me crucé con este libro. Inmediatamente envíe la solicitud con la esperanza de que me permitieran leerlo para reseña y, por suerte, acá estoy.
Es increíble, pero Tousolouse-Lautrec ya no es mi artista preferido de ese período y estilo, porque gracias a esta publicación descubrí nuevos "Maestros" preferidos como lo son Chéret, Grasset, de Feure, Mucha, Steinlen, The Beggarstaffs, Roedel y Berthon (en ese orden).
Este libro es esencial para cualquier persona: desde los legos, como yo, a quienes les gusta o interesa ese período o estilo hasta los coleccionistas, porque el estilo en el que están publicados los carteles permite disfrutar completamente de las obras en su plenitud, ya que se pueden apreciar los detalles.

Monet: The Early Years

I'd like to start this review why saying that I believe this is the most comprehensive book on Monet's life and work.
Although I'm nothing close to a Monet expert, I have read a fair share about him and his art. However, this book includes many facts that throw light on some aspects, and even  information I did not know.
This is ideal for any person interested in Monet —from first-timers to scholars— because of the complete and diverse information regarding his life and times.
On a different yet similar note, should you happen to have the opportunity to experience the exhibition in person, I would highly recommend you do so. If not because you like Monet, at least for the historical relevance of the event itself.

Wildwitch: Oblivion (Book 2) - Lene Kaaberbøl

When I requested this book for review I didn't realize it was part of a series. Therefore, I made sure I found a copy of the first one (Wildfire). This series is being compared to Harry Potter, which is an not quite right. While there is magic involved, the protagonist has nothing in common with Harry: she has a loving family in spite of her parents being divorced, her magical teaching comes from an aunt and her acquaintances from this magical world. The only two elements similar to Rowling's series are magical -or should I say mythological- beings and her apparently being 'the chosen one' - but in a different fashion.
I liked this second installment  better than the first one because here we see Clara grow -both as a young woman and as a witch- and we get more worldbuilding, which was what I would have liked to have seen more in the previous one.
Having that said, I believe this is a great series for younger children to read before diving into the Harry Potter world, mainly because the language, writing style and concept are more approachable for that age range. On a different note, I also think there should be more children books originally written in languages other than English, Spanish or French in the market, because there are some gems that hadn't been made available to readers of said languages, and variety is always welcome.

Cuando solicité este libro para hacer una reseña no me di cuenta de que era parte de una serie. Por ende, me aseguré de conseguir el primer libro (Wildfire) para leerlo primero. Se compara erróneamente a esta serie con Harry Potter porque, si bien hay magia, la protagonista no tiene nada en común con Harry: sus padres están separados pero tiene una familia que la ama, su fuente de aprendizaje mágico viene de su tía y de sus conocidos del mundo mágico. Los únicos dos elementos similares a los de la serie de Rowling son los seres mágicos (o mejor dicho mitológicos), y que ella parecería ser una especie de "elegida", pero por un motivo muy diferente.

Me gustó más esta segunda entrega de la serie que la primera porque vemos a Clara crecer como joven adulta y como bruja, y también hay mucho más desarrollo del mundo en sí; cosa que me hubiera gustado ver más en el anterior.

Espero que alguna editorial traiga la traducción al español para estos lares porque creo que esta es una muy buena serie para que los chicos más jóvenes lean antes de sumergirse en el mundo de Harry Potter. El lenguaje, el estilo y el contenido es más accesible para esa rango etario. Además me parece que debería haber un mercado más grande de libro para niños originalmente escritos en idiomas que no sean inglés, español o francés, porque la variedad de estilos siempre viene bien y estoy segura de que hay algunos tesoros escondidos a los que ese público no ha tenido alcance.

The Language of Dying - Sarah Pinborough

This beautifully written story has a magical realism element, but that doesn't affect the realist sadness  the reader experiences throughout the whole book, mainly thanks to the heart-wrenching truthfulness in Sarah Pinborough's impeccable narrative style.

Prepare yourselves for an emotional ride that will take you places in your memory you hadn't revisited in a while and even experience feelings, decisions and reactions you have never had to go through, but living them first hand while reading this captivating story.

Without leaving the house where the story starts with a woman next to her father in his deathbed, the narrative moves constantly backwards and forward filling in the gaps presented in the first chapters. 

This is the best true-to-life family drama I have read this year, in spite of it having a significantly strange magical element.

En esta historia escrita de manera hermosa hay un elemento de realismo mágico, pero eso no afecta la tristeza realista que el lector experimenta a lo largo del libro, principalmente gracias a la veracidad desgarradora del estilo narrativo impecable de Sarah Pinborough.
Prepárense para una montaña rusa emocional que los llevará a lugares de sus recuerdos que hacía mucho no visitaban, e incluso a experimentar sentimientos, decisiones, y reacciones por las que nunca les tocó pasar, pero sintiéndolas en primera persona mientras van leyendo esta historia cautivante.
La  historia comienza con una mujer sentada junto a su padre en su lecho de muerte. Sin moverse de ese lugar, la historia va constantemente hacia atrás y hacia adelante para llenar los vacíos que se presentan en la primera parte del libro.
Este es el mejor drama familiar que sentí verdadero este año, a pesar de que contiene un elemento mágico extraño.

The Vincent van Gogh Atlas - Nienke Denekamp

REVIEW

This impeccably and thoroughly researched atlas-biography hybrid is easily the best comprehensive work I've read on Vincent van Gogh. The focus isn't the cliché of the unstable, depressed artist who cut off his ear. On the contrary, it portrays him as what he was: an eccentric, misunderstood and sensitive man who never found his place in the world because he was happy being a citizen of Europe; it even feels like a travelogue.

I very much enjoyed the originality of including an illustrative timeline at the beginning to indicate not only the pages and years, but also places, houses and his age. It included small reproductions of his self-portraits according to when he painted them, as well as illustrations to show how his residences looked throughout his life.
Adding to that travelogue feel, at the start of each chapter there is a map of the place where he was living, coupled with memorabilia of that period in the form of a collage. Currencies, correspondence, photographies and schedules are some of the items included.
Another thing I always love finding in a book -especially if I'm reading a biography- is a family tree, so I was very pleased to find one here. I've read many biographies on van Gogh, but I'd never realized that the sons died fairly young (in their thirties), while the daughters were considerably longevous (died in their seventies or older) until I saw them next to each other in this tree.
Needless to say, his whole work is included in this work, including some of the sketches present in the letters he sent to Theo over the years.
The only thing I would criticize is the fact that at some point it is mentioned that Vincent sent Theo a list of over sixty of his current favorite artists (there even is an illegible photo included) but the artists in question are not specified. Nevertheless, that doesn't take from the fact that this is one of my favorite reads of the year.

Disney Manga Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas - Jun Asuka

Si sos fanático de la película sin duda este manga tiene que formar parte de tu colección, porque esto es lo más cercano a un libro que se puede hacer sin perder la esencia y el espíritu de la peli. La historia no se modificó para nada, y las ilustraciones son prácticamente idénticas al original -salvo algunos paneles-, ¡e incluso incluyeron las canciones! What I didn't like: - Hubiera preferido que lo hicieran como cómic. No por el formato en sí, sino porque las expresiones orientales que se utilizan en los mangas perturba la atmósfera espeluznante tan característica de la película. - El personaje de Sally me pareció demasiado dramático por momentos, sobre todo por algunas expresiones exageradas. What I didn't like: - I would've preferred it as a comic. Este libro es ideal para los fanáticos del misterio y que están buscando algo diferente. Es un thriller psicológico con tintes legales y una atmósfera muy similar a la de El secreto de Donna Tartt. El estilo de escritura es atrapante y hace que uno quiera saber cómo se va a desarrollar la historia, principalmente debido al elemento misterioso que se insinúa a lo largo del libro. Nota: cuando solicité este libro no sabía que formaba parte de otro libro, y que la "autora" en realidad es un personaje de ese mismo libro. Esta colección me recuerda a La cámara sangrienta de Angela Carter porque está compuesta de cuentos de hadas oscuros y originales con un giro feminista (incluso algunas versiones de cuentos conocidos). El estilo de escritura es hermoso y muy poético. La mayoría de las historias no me convencieron, pero haber leído este libro hizo que descubriera una nueva autora y que me interesara en leer más de su trabajo por la belleza de la escritura. Además, este libro tiene algunos de los títulos más lindos que leí en mi vida. Mis favoritos fueron: Dresses, Three. Su madre es una modista que es vendida y revendida entre mujeres ricas para que haga vestidos para ellas. Por ese motivo viajan mucho y no tienen un lugar al que puedan llamar hogar. La venden una vez más a una familia adinerada y, en ese castillo, una gobernanta le enseña al  niño a leer. A Cerridwen le encargan que cree tres vestidos muy especiales para la temporada. Dichos vestidos va a usarlos la misma edad que ella: 17 años. Aurora, la joven, le ofrece hacer un trato: si cumple exactamente con lo que se le pide, la liberará a ella y a su hijo y se asegurará de que nunca les falte nada y que no tengan que trabajar nunca más en sus vidas. Primer vestido: plumas de pavo real. Segundo vestido: alas de mariposa. Tercer vestido: palabras. Cerridwen no necesita hacer bosquejos, tomar notas o medidas porque cobran forma en su mente. The writing is beautiful and very poetic. The majority of the stories didn't quite convince me, but this read definitely helped me discover a new author whose work I'm looking forward to continue reading because of the magnificent writing style, tone and pace. Also, this book contains some of the most beautiful story titles I've ever read. My favorites were: Dresses, Three. His mother is a seamstress and she was sold and resold amongst rich women to make dresses for them. Therefore, they both travel a lot and don't have an actual place to call home. She is once again sold to a wealthy family and, in their castle, a governess teaches the boy to read. Cerridwen is asked to create three very special dresses for the season, which will be work by a girl who is 17, just like her. She offers Aurora to make a deal: if she delivers exactly what she is being asked, Aurora will free her and make sure she and her son never have to work ever again. First dress: peacock feathers. Second dress: butterfly wings. Third dress: words. Cerridwen doesn't need to sketch, take notes or measurements. It all takes shape in her mind, and they all end up looking alive because she is a witch and is weakened after each dress. The Badger Bride. Gytha is a copyist and she has been commanded to work on an untitled, anonymous book. What makes the whole situation even stranger is the fact that the client's identity is undisclosed and the deadline is urgent. When she gets working on the book the ink seems to fade away upon sight and, although the text makes no sense, she reads a fragment aloud. Bitter Sweet Love - Michael Faudet

Esta colección de poemas es variada pero, lamentablemente, no es mi estilo. Si bien hay contiene algunos poemas hermosos, la mayoría no me generó ninguna sensación o pensamiento e incluso muchos resultaban desagradables de leer (en especial por los personajes y/o situaciones demasiado sexualizadas en un tipo de texto que no los ameritaba). Otra cosa que no me gustó fue que hay dos "figuritas repetidas". A lo que me refiero con esto es que dos secciones de dos poemas aparecen varias páginas más adelante como si se tratara de otros poemas cortos cuando ya habían aparecido como parte de otros. Si es todo esto es algo que no te molesta e incluso te gusta leer, te invito a que lo leas. Although there are some beautiful poems, most of them left me no lingering feeling or thought and some were not pleasing to read (especially those that were overly sexualized in a text where it was uncalled for.) Another thing that I didn't like was the fact that there were two "repeats", meaning sections of two whole poems were listed as a different one several pages later. Esta es una colección de ensayos muy interesante y completa que recopila los mejores y más interesantes ensayos de uno de los especialistas más relevantes en lo respectivo a estudios shakesperianos. La colección está dividida en: 1) Influencias: disfruté en gran medida leer acerca de Shakespeare desde un enfoque como un hombre europeo y no simplemente inglés como de costumbre. 2) Ensayos sobre obras en particular: cada ensayo se enfoca en analizar ciertas piezas individualmente. Esta parte es la que contiene más hechos y aspectos analizado ya conocidos. No obstante, para una persona que recién comienza a adentrarse en esta clase de ensayos, esta sección es un buen comienzo por el amplio espectro de temas que se tocan. Además, debe tenerse en cuenta que hace 400 años que se viene estudiando a Shakespeare, por lo que es comprensible que a esta altura ya ni aparezca mucho material nuevo sobre el tema. 3) Shakespeare en el teatro: estos ensayos abordan aspectos específicos del proceso que implica montar en escena sus obras, y se concentra la atención en el tema del género (hombres encarnando personajes femeninos). Esta parte es la que me pareció más interesante porque aportaba nueva información y perspectivas que no se me habían ocurrido antes. 4) Textos shakesperianos: aquí se habla de los formatos y versiones de las piezas. Este último grupo de ensayos no es para mí porque no me interesa mucho lo respectivo a formatos, edición y aspectos monetarios. Sin embargo, el contenido me pareció interesante como texto con una descripción profunda si se lo piensa como apuntado a un público que busca saber más de esos temas. The collection is divided into: 1) Shakespearean Influences, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Shakespeare seen on a European man, rather than just English as he is usually viewed. 2) Essays on Particular Works, in which each essay focuses on analyzing given pieces individually. This was the part that contained the most part of well-known facts and analysis. However, for a newcomer to this field of essays it provides a broad spectrum of topics to start with. Also, it must be taken into account the fact that Shakespeare has been studied and analyzed for four centuries. Hence, it is understandable that there won't appear much new material on the subject. 3) Shakespeare in Theatre, which tackle the theme of specific aspects of the staging process, mainly concentrating on the matter of gender and roles (men playing female characters). This section I found to be the most interesting because it provided new knowledge and perspectives that hadn't crossed my mind before. 4) Shakespeare's Text, which talk about formats, and versions of the plays. This last set wasn't  my cup of tea, because I am not much interested in formatting, editing, and monetary matters. Nevertheless, the content read as an interesting and in-depth depiction for those interesting in said subjects. Having that said, I feel there is a great variety of themes, content, styles and approaches and, therefore, there is something for anyone interested in literary criticism on William Shakespeare's work. Jeff Koons... 3) Movimientos neoyorkinos: en esta parte se detallan las raíces del arte en esta ciudad, principalmente los movimientos que surgieron allí y exhibiciones importantes. Esta es una muy buena idea original para una historia que no se parece a nada que haya leído antes. El personaje principal despierta en plena calle sin recuerdo alguno; ni siquiera sabe quién es. Se encuentra en una porción de Nueva Yoek que parece ser una isla flotante en el aire que fue arrancada del resto del mundo y se corta en seco en los bordes. No está solo, pero los otros están en su misma situación. Por una travesía que sale mal, se cae del borde del mundo y aterriza en una sección diferente que tiene las mismas características que la suya. Debido a ese incidente decide adoptar el nombre Faller (caedor). Luego descubre que hay muchos otros mundos y se arriesga a investigar varios con la esperanza de encontrar a la mujer cuya fotografía encontró en su bolsillo. Por otra parte tenemos la segunda historia "previa" que parece explicar qué es lo que está sucediendo en todos esos mundos y por qué. Esta es una novela postapocalíptica de ciencia ficción que es muy atrapante y es un buen comienzo para adentrarse en el género principalmente por la fluidez de la historia y la originalidad de la historia. It resembles nothing I've read. The main character wakes up in the middle of a street and doesn't remember anything, not even who he is. He finds himself on a portion of New York that seems to be a floating island that has been ripped from the rest of the world and stops in the borders. He's not alone, but the others are in the same situation as him. Because of a stunt gone wrong, he falls off the edge of the world and lands in a different section, with the same characteristics as his own and, for this reason, he adopts the name "Faller". He then discovers that there are multiple worlds, and he ventures to several of them, hoping to find the woman whose picture he found in his pocket. Then we have a second "previous" story that seems to explain what is happening in those worlds and why. A gripping post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that may well serve as an introduction to the genre because of its fluid writing and interesting story. Esta es una cruza entre crimen real y biografía que está muy bien realizada. Me gustó mucho que King prefiriera hacer que el foco no fueran los asesinos (si bien hay un relato detallado acerca de ellos y sus vidas) sino incluir un gran volumen de información nueva acerca de las víctimas, particularmente e la actriz Sharon Tate. Se relata el impacto que los eventos tuvieron en los familiares de las víctimas e incluso se habla de qué sucedió luego de finalizado el juicio con aquellos involucrados. Gran parte del libro trata sobre Sharon y su vida, y se la muestra como realmente era, sin victimizarla. He talks about how the events impacted on the victims' families and there also is a part on what happened after the trial to those involved. The majority of the book is about Sharon and her life and showing who she really was, without victimizing her, Hopefully, this book will contribute to her being remembered as a sweet person and then-upcoming actress, and not as a celebrity who met her end by the hands of The Manson Family. Este libro trata sobre un futuro distópico en el que se ha descubierto una "fuente de la juventud" en forma de píldora que permite a las personas vivir cientos de años más. Sin embargo, y por supuesto, es cara y sólo pueden acceder a ella las personas de los más altos rangos y más adinerados. En la otra cara de la moneda tenemos a algunos rebeldes y también a un pequeño grupo de idealistas que buscan generar una revolución al lograr que esta píldora esté disponible para todo el mundo. El concepto sonaba genial, pero no me gustó la forma en que se lo desarrolló. Teniendo en cuenta que se trata de un libro de unas 100 páginas, todo lo que sucedía se sentía como apresurado y poco claro en algunos momentos. Creo que, de haber sido un poco más largo, se podrían haber desarrollado mejor tanto los personajes como el mundo en sí, y se habría llegado a un texto mucho más interesante y completo. Sí sentí muy bien realizada la visión de nuestra sociedad arruinando un descubrimiento científico tan importante y distorsionándolo para convertirlo en un negocio. It enables people to live hundreds of years longer  but it of course expensive and thus only attainable by rich people. On the other side of the coin there are rebels but there also is a small group of idealists hoping to spark a revolution and make the Fix available to everyone. The premise of this book sounded great but I didn't enjoy how it was developed. Being only about 100 pages everything felt somewhat rushed and I believe I could have been more enjoyable had the world and characters been more developed in a longer read. What I did find was well depicted was the fact that should there be a scientific breakthrough as such, we, as a society, would most certainly distort its purpose and turn it into a business.
