Wildwitch: Oblivion (Book 2) - Lene Kaaberbøl

When I requested this book for review I didn't realize it was part of a series. Therefore, I made sure I found a copy of the first one (Wildfire). This series is being compared to Harry Potter, which is an not quite right. While there is magic involved, the protagonist has nothing in common with Harry: she has a loving family in spite of her parents being divorced, her magical teaching comes from an aunt and her acquaintances from this magical world. The only two elements similar to Rowling's series are magical -or should I say mythological- beings and her apparently being 'the chosen one' - but in a different fashion.
I liked this second installment  better than the first one because here we see Clara grow -both as a young woman and as a witch- and we get more worldbuilding, which was what I would have liked to have seen more in the previous one.
Having that said, I believe this is a great series for younger children to read before diving into the Harry Potter world, mainly because the language, writing style and concept are more approachable for that age range. On a different note, I also think there should be more children books originally written in languages other than English, Spanish or French in the market, because there are some gems that hadn't been made available to readers of said languages, and variety is always welcome.

Cuando solicité este libro para hacer una reseña no me di cuenta de que era parte de una serie. Por ende, me aseguré de conseguir el primer libro (Wildfire) para leerlo primero. Se compara erróneamente a esta serie con Harry Potter porque, si bien hay magia, la protagonista no tiene nada en común con Harry: sus padres están separados pero tiene una familia que la ama, su fuente de aprendizaje mágico viene de su tía y de sus conocidos del mundo mágico. Los únicos dos elementos similares a los de la serie de Rowling son los seres mágicos (o mejor dicho mitológicos), y que ella parecería ser una especie de "elegida", pero por un motivo muy diferente.

Me gustó más esta segunda entrega de la serie que la primera porque vemos a Clara crecer como joven adulta y como bruja, y también hay mucho más desarrollo del mundo en sí; cosa que me hubiera gustado ver más en el anterior.

Espero que alguna editorial traiga la traducción al español para estos lares porque creo que esta es una muy buena serie para que los chicos más jóvenes lean antes de sumergirse en el mundo de Harry Potter. El lenguaje, el estilo y el contenido es más accesible para esa rango etario. Además me parece que debería haber un mercado más grande de libro para niños originalmente escritos en idiomas que no sean inglés, español o francés, porque la variedad de estilos siempre viene bien y estoy segura de que hay algunos tesoros escondidos a los que ese público no ha tenido alcance.

The Language of Dying - Sarah Pinborough

This beautifully written story has a magical realism element, but that doesn't affect the realist sadness  the reader experiences throughout the whole book, mainly thanks to the heart-wrenching truthfulness in Sarah Pinborough's impeccable narrative style.

Prepare yourselves for an emotional ride that will take you places in your memory you hadn't revisited in a while and even experience feelings, decisions and reactions you have never had to go through, but living them first hand while reading this captivating story.

Without leaving the house where the story starts with a woman next to her father in his deathbed, the narrative moves constantly backwards and forward filling in the gaps presented in the first chapters. 

This is the best true-to-life family drama I have read this year, in spite of it having a significantly strange magical element.

En esta historia escrita de manera hermosa hay un elemento de realismo mágico, pero eso no afecta la tristeza realista que el lector experimenta a lo largo del libro, principalmente gracias a la veracidad desgarradora del estilo narrativo impecable de Sarah Pinborough.
Prepárense para una montaña rusa emocional que los llevará a lugares de sus recuerdos que hacía mucho no visitaban, e incluso a experimentar sentimientos, decisiones, y reacciones por las que nunca les tocó pasar, pero sintiéndolas en primera persona mientras van leyendo esta historia cautivante.
La  historia comienza con una mujer sentada junto a su padre en su lecho de muerte. Sin moverse de ese lugar, la historia va constantemente hacia atrás y hacia adelante para llenar los vacíos que se presentan en la primera parte del libro.
Este es el mejor drama familiar que sentí verdadero este año, a pesar de que contiene un elemento mágico extraño.

Faller - Will McIntosh

Esta es una muy buena idea original para una historia que no se parece a nada que haya leído antes. El personaje principal despierta en plena calle sin recuerdo alguno; ni siquiera sabe quién es. Se encuentra en una porción de Nueva Yoek que parece ser una isla flotante en el aire que fue arrancada del resto del mundo y se corta en seco en los bordes. No está solo, pero los otros están en su misma situación. Por una travesía que sale mal, se cae del borde del mundo y aterriza en una sección diferente que tiene las mismas características que la suya. Debido a ese incidente decide adoptar el nombre Faller (caedor). Luego descubre que hay muchos otros mundos y se arriesga a investigar varios con la esperanza de encontrar a la mujer cuya fotografía encontró en su bolsillo. Por otra parte tenemos la segunda historia "previa" que parece explicar qué es lo que está sucediendo en todos esos mundos y por qué. Esta es una novela postapocalíptica de ciencia ficción que es muy atrapante y es un buen comienzo para adentrarse en el género principalmente por la fluidez de la historia y la originalidad de la historia. It resembles nothing I've read. The main character wakes up in the middle of a street and doesn't remember anything, not even who he is. He finds himself on a portion of New York that seems to be a floating island that has been ripped from the rest of the world and stops in the borders. He's not alone, but the others are in the same situation as him. Because of a stunt gone wrong, he falls off the edge of the world and lands in a different section, with the same characteristics as his own and, for this reason, he adopts the name "Faller". He then discovers that there are multiple worlds, and he ventures to several of them, hoping to find the woman whose picture he found in his pocket. Then we have a second "previous" story that seems to explain what is happening in those worlds and why. A gripping post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that may well serve as an introduction to the genre because of its fluid writing and interesting story. The Other Einstein - Marie Benedict

Cuando empecé este libro no estaba al tanto de que estaba escrito como una novela de ficción acerca de la vida de Mileva y lo yo esperaba leer algo más biográfico. Siento que esa decisión le quitó seriedad al texto porque uno no sabe qué cosas son reales y cuáles fueron inventadas o modificadas para que quedaran mejor en esa clase de historia. La autora enfocó la historia en el cliché de "la mujer detrás del gran hombre" y me parece que este libro podría haber sido mucho más interesante si hubiera seguido la vida de Mileva independientemente de Einstein, en lugar de que él fuera el centro y que cada evento de la vida de ella pareciera girar en torno a él. Lamentablemente no obtuve lo que esperaba leer. Yo buscaba una historia inspiradora acerca de una mujer independiente con personalidad fuerte que logró entrar a la universidad y estudiar en el exterior en el 1800 en un establecimiento que en el que era la única estudiante femenina. También me sentí que la investigación no era muy confiable desde el punto en que la misma autora aclara que los hechos contenidos en el texto pueden o no ser exactos o incluso verdaderos. I feel like that  was a wrong decision because it is impossible to know which facts are real and which have been modified or invented to better suit that kind of story, The author focused on the cliché of  "the woman behind a great man" and I believe this book would have been far more interesting if it had followed Mileva's life separately from Einstein rather than using him as the center of the story around whom everything seemed to have happened. Unfortunately, I didn't get what I was hoping to read, which was an inspiring story about an independent woman with a strong personality who managed to get into College to study abroad in the 1800s being the only female student. I also felt that the research was not strong, because even the author herself states that much of what she is telling throughout the book may or may not be accurate or true. Este libro es uno de los finalistas para el premio literario Man Booker del 2016 y es diferente a todo lo que leí este año. Es muy probable que esto se deba al formato utilizado porque está compuesto del relato del asesino, informes forenses, documentos judiciales y una evaluación psicológica. Se lee como si se tratara de un documental "basado en hechos reales". Cuenta la historia de un hombre que asesinó a tres personas en un mismo día, pero el misterio es develar el motivo y no el autor, porque sabemos desde el principio, y por boca del asesino, que él los asesinó, con la intención original de que el muerto fuera un hombre en particular. El lector nunca está seguro de si se trata de un narrador poco fiable o no, y eso es lo que mantiene el suspenso a lo largo del libro. ¿Está demente? ¿Dice la verdad? Si realmente está loco, lo que cuenta es lo que él realmente cree verdadero y está convencido de que los acontecimientos se desarrollaron de ese modo. It is comprised of the killer's account of the events, coroner's reports, trial documents, testimonies and a psychological evaluation. It reads like a true account of real events, somewhat like a documentary. It tells the story of a man that murdered three people on the same day but it's more a whydunit than a whodunit because we are told by Roderick himself that he has murdered them, with the original intention of killing one man in particular. The reader is never sure whether he is an unreliable narrator or not, which is what keeps the suspense throughout the book. Is he insane? What he is telling is true?  If he is indeed insane he believes what in contained in his account of the events, he truly thinks it happened that way. In the end, it is up to us readers to decide who and what to believe. Sirius - Jonathan Crown

Esta es la historia de un Fox Terrier y la forma en que cambia la vida de las personas con las que se va involucrando a lo largo de su vida. Me pareció genial que el autor hiciera que los protagonistas de esta historia fueran parte de una familia  nuclear con un buen pasar, porque lo diferencia de otros libros que se desarrollan durante la era de Hitler, y además demuestra que la gente talentosa e incluso los científicos tampoco estaban a salvo durante el régimen. Levi/Sirius/Hansi me hizo acordar todo el tiempo a Uggie de la película El Artista, y la atmósfera del libro mantuvo ese aire de los años 30, especialmente la Época Dorada de Hollywood. Al ser una gran amante de los animales, particularmente de los perros, en algunas partes los pensamientos y reacciones de Levi me llegaron al corazón y se me humedecieron los ojos. Si amás a los perros te va a encantar este libro, pero "cuidado con el perro" , porque te va a hacer pasar de la risa a las lágrimas de una página a otra. I found it great that the author made the central family in the story an upper-class nuclear family, which sets it apart from other books set during Hitler's era, showing that no one, even scientists or talented people was safe from the regime. Levi/Sirius/Hansi reminded me of Uggie from the movie The Artist, and the whole book had a great portrayal of the 1930s- particularly Hollywood's Golden Age. Some parts with Levi's thoughts and reactions touched my heart, being a dog lover myself and almost got me to tears. Esta versión moderna de la leyenda de Orfeo y Eurídice es ideal para quienes disfruten de historias oscuras y extrañas con elementos mágicos. Kay es una acróbata que recibe una oferta para trabajar en un circo al aire libre en las calles de Québec. Su marido es traductor y, como puede trabajar en cualquier parte del mundo, sugiere que alarguen su luna de miel para que ella pueda hacer lo que le gusta. Kay ve en una vidriera un títere único y se enamora. Cada vez que pasa por esa tienda se detiene a mirarlo. Este lugar, con su puerta siempre cerrada, sus luces siempre apagadas y sin señal alguna de entradas o salidas, parece estar cerrada o incluso abandonada. Me gustó mucho que Theo sea traductor porque me puedo identificar con ese aspecto de su vida. Me parece genial que el lector pueda tener un pantallazo del proceso de traducción y de cómo, a veces, el texto que se está traduciendo tiene muchas cosas en común con la vida misma del traductor. Me recordó mucho a El imaginario del Dr. Parnassus (por el circo callejero y los personajes extravagantes), Toy Story (los títeres no pueden moverse en presencia de los humanos), Alicia en el país de las maravillas (hay varias referencias en el texto y ella se vuelve pequeña y luego grande), y por supuesto Pinocho (en este caso el alma se convierte en títere y no al revés). Kay is an acrobat who is offered a part as a street performer in an outdoor circus in Québec. Because of that job opportunity, she and her husband are on a kind of extended honeymoon. Being a translator, Theo is able to work anywhere in the world, and he decides they stay so that she can do what she loves. Kay becomes in love with a unique puppet displayed on a window in a shop. Every time she passes by she stops to look for him. With its door always closed, the lights always off,  and no one ever entering or leaving, the shop seems to be either closed or abandoned. One day, upon leaving, Kay fails to see her beloved wooden doll turn his head to watch her. On a different occasion, Theo sees the lights of the shop switched on but, upon trying the knob, he finds it locked and the lights suddenly go off again. While escaping a stalker after a late party, Kay finds herself at the door of the shop and, when she tries the knob, it turns. When she wakes up, she realizes she has been transformed into a puppet herself, with her senses intact, but unable to speak and struggling to remember. Yet she is not alone; there are others like her in the room. I really enjoyed the fact that Theo is a translator because I can relate to that aspect of his life. It is great to see a bit of the translation process and how, sometimes, what we are working on can have parallelisms with our own life. This work reminded me of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (street circus, extravagant characters), Toy Story (the puppets can't move while in the presence of humans), Alice 's Adventures in Wonderland (many references; getting small and then big), and of course Pinocchio (in this case the human soul becomes a puppet and not the other way around.) Brainwalker - Robyn Mundell & Stephan Lacast

Mi impresión No esperaba que este libro ocurrente, irónico, divertido y educativo se convirtiera es una de mis lecturas preferidas de este año. Me encantaron las ilustraciones bosquejadas, que casi parecen salidas de un libro de texto. El mundo está muy bien creado. La historia me pareció cautivadora y llena de acción al mismo tiempo, llena de hermosos mensajes profundos que estimulan el pensamiento. La historia Bernard es un joven que vive con su padre porque su madre ya ha fallecido. Ella era un científica apasionada que abandonó una carrera prometedora en el campo de la Química para dedicarse a su pasión: la Alquimia. "No tenía miedo de probar cosas nuevas" y creía que "lo importante era experimentar". Su padre, por el contrario, cree que "la ciencia se trata de establecer hipótesis y probarlas", y que "todo tiene que ser firme y comprobable", lo que demuestra que él es una persona más lógica que se basa en hechos. Luego de que tanto su padre como su maestra rechazaran su idea innovadora para el proyecto de ciencias, se ve forzado a pensar en una nueva. Mientras se está bañando, se le prende la lamparita: ¡agujeros negros!. Sin embargo, cuando se ve atrapado en uno que lo trasladada dentro del cerebro de su padre, no parecen tan divertidos. Allí dentro, nada se parece a como lo describió su maestra. Se trata de todo un Cerebriverso con criaturas, edificios andantes y transportes vivientes. Es ahí cuando comienza su aventura. Conclusión Es genial que los jóvenes lectores tengan como personaje a un niño que no teme pensar de manera diferente a la de sus compañeros y permite que el hecho de que su maestra de mente cerrada y su padre poco compasivo lo alejen de su amor por la ciencia. Esta es la clase de libros que los niños de hoy deberían leer. Acerca de personajes e historias que les enseñan a no dejarse influenciar por lo que otras personas dicen o piensan, y a seguir siendo quienes son. I adored the sketch-like, almost textbook illustrations, the worldbuilding was incredibly well crafted, the story was compelling and action-packed at the same time, and  there were a lot of beautiful profound and thought-provoking messages here and there. The story Bernard is a young boy. He lives with his father because his mother has passed away. She was a passionate scientist who abandoned a promising career in chemistry to follow her passion: alchemy. She "wasn't afraid to try new things" and believed that "the important thing is experimenting." On the contrary, his father thinks that "In science, it's all about stating hypothesis, then proving it" and that "everything has to be solid and have proof", which shows he is a more logical, fact-driven person. After having his original idea rejected by both his teacher and father, Bernard has to come up with a different idea for his science project. While taking a bath, it strikes him: wormholes! Yet, when he gets swallowed by one at his dad's workplace, they don't seem as fun, especially because he ends up inside his father's brain! In there, nothing looks like his teacher described it. There's a whole Brainiverse with creatures, walking buildings and living transports. And then, his adventure begins. Conclusion It is great for young readers to have a character who isn't afraid to think differently than his classmates and doesn't get put off of science because of being misunderstood by a narrow-minded teacher and a seemingly unsupportive father. Kids should be reading these kind of books; those with characters and stories that teach them to be who they are and to not let other people change them. Dean Koontz's Frankenstein: Storm Surge

En esta reversión contemporánea de Frankenstein, el Dr. continuó generando más criaturas y, además, comenzó a viajar a un mundo paralelo a través de un espejo. Suena similar a Alicia a través del espejo, ¿no? También tiene una especie de santuario debajo de su laboratorio, donde están ocultos sus fracasos. Ha intentado crear una mujer "perfecta" para sí mismo y lo ha conseguido. Ella es la protagonista y es el quinto intento de acompañante de Frnakenstein. Obviamente la descuida y maltrata, por lo que ella quiere investigar qué es lo que esconde en el sótano. Su secuaz es Karloff, mi personale preferido. Él es lo que queda de uno de los hombres descuartizados: una cabeza parlante y una mano rebelde que tiene mente propia. Parace increíble que esta extraña mezcla entre Frankenstein, Alicia  a través del espejo y The Walking Deadamazingly funcione muy bien. He has been trying to create a "perfect" woman for himself, and he has succeeded in doing so. She's the main character and is the fifth one of his manufactured companions. He obviously neglects and mistreats her, that is the reason why she wants to find out what he is hiding down there. Her sidekick is Karloff, my favorite character; the last remains of one of the dismemebered men: a disembodied talking head and a rebel hand with a mind of its own. This is a strange mix of Frankenstein -of course-, Through the Looking-Glass and The Walking Dead that amazingly works together. The Red Ripper - Peter Conradi

Primero abordemos el tema obvio. La foto de tapa es escalofriante, así que se pueden imaginar qué clase de lectura me proporcionó este libro. Esta no es cualquier biografía de un asesino serial porque apunta a explicar y analizar el desarrollo mental de un asesino psicópata. Por supuesto hay un complemento biográfico que detalla la vida de Chikatilo's y la forma en que aterrorizó al sur de Rusia dejando más de 52 víctimas. Comenzó con violando a víctimas pasivas que él sabía no iban a oponer resistencia. Eso desembocó en asesinato, que luego evolucionó a tortura previa a dicho acto. Conradi hizo un gran trabajo para crear un marco de tiempo y espacio a través de detalladas descripciones históricas y culturales. Además, hacia el final del libro se incluye una cronología y una galería de imágenes a modo de resumen escrito y gráfico del relato completo. Este libro se destacó entre otros similares que leí porque se lee como una novela de suspenso basada en hechos reales. Ahora pasamos a la historia.  El primer episodio ocurrió cuando estaba acurrucado con una chica durante una cita. Ella quería librarse de su abrazo pero Chikatilo no la soltaba. Eventualmente la liberó, pero sintió placer por la situación. "Se había formado el primer vínculo peligroso en su subconsciente que unía al disfrute sexual con la violencia física". "Sufrí mucho porque me daba cuenta de que era diferente de todos los demás". "Por desgracia, el trabajo de Chikatilo como maestro de escuela le dio la oprtunidad de materializar sus fantasías sexuales con menores de edad porque ante ellas sentía menos vergüenza que ante adultos".  "La vergüenza que sentía Chikatilo era tan paralizante que lo volvía virtualmente impotente". Cuando atrajo a su primer víctima (una niña de nueve años) a su casa e intentó violarla volvió a surgir su impotencia, pero la aparición de sangre despertó su sed de sangre. Al matarla a puñaladas, el cuchillo se convirtió en un sustituto de su órgano sexual. Cuando la policía lo interrogó por este caso, él ya contaba con antecedentes por abuso de menores en la escuela donde había trabajado anteriormente. No obstante, la policía se concentró en un vecino que ya había recibido una condena por asesinato sexual, y, al final, fue ejecutado por el crimen de Chikatilo. Años más tarde, cuando arrestaron a Chikatilo como sospechoso de asesinato, a pesar de que le encontraron elementos incriminatorios, tuvieron que dejarlo libre. Tuvo la suerte de ser uno de los pocos hombres cuyo grupo espermático no coincide con su grupo sanguíneo. Sus asesinatos se fueron volviendo más crueles con el paso del tiempo. Matar ya no le resultaba suficiente, por lo que comenzó a prolongar e intensificar el sufrimiento de sus víctimas mediante tortura previa al asesinato. Resulta muy interesante cómo lo atraparon porque es recuerda a la forma en que Al Capone cayó por un tema de impuestos. Me molestaron dos cosas de este libro. Una fue la equiparación de la homosexualidad con pedofilia, sadismo y necrofilia. La otra fue el modo condescendiente en que se representa a los discapacitados. Por eso no le doy 4 estrellas. The cover photo alone is terrifying, so you can imagine how the reading experience was. This is a different kind of serial killer book because its main focus is to explain and analyze the mental development of a psychopathic killer. It is of course complemented with a thorough account on Chikatilo's life and how he terrorized the south of Russia, leaving a trail of over 52 victims. He started with violation of   passive victims he knew wouldn't resist. That led to killing and then evolved into torture previous to the murders. A great work has been achieved in framing the time and place of the murders by cultural and historical detailed descriptions. A chronology and an image gallery are also included at the end as a means for summarizing and illustrating all the events. What made this stand out from the other book similar to this one that I've read is the fact that it reads more like thriller based on true events. Now let's talk about the story.  The first episode happened while he was cuddling with a girl during a date. She wanted to break free but Chikatilo wouldn't let her go. He did free her in the end, but experienced pleasure from the situation. "The first dangerous link in his subconscious between sexual enjoyment and physical violence had been made." "I suffered because I realized that I was different from everyone else." "Unfortunately, Chikatilo's work as a schoolteacher gave him the opportunity to develop his own sexual fantasies-sex with underage girls, with whom he felt less shy than adults."  Chikatilo "was so paralysingly shy that it made him virtually impotent." When he lured his first nine-year-old victim into his house and tried to rape her, he found himself impotent again, but it was the sight of her blood that triggered his lust for blood. Stabbing her to death, the knife became a substitute for his sexual organ. When police came to question him, he already had a record as a child molestor from the school where he used to teach, but the police concentrated their attention on a neighbor who had already been convicted for a sex murder and was finally executed for Chikatilo's crime. Years later, when he was arrested as a murder suspect, in spite having incriminating elements, he was freed because he was one of the few men whose sperm group differs from his blood group. His murders were becoming more cruel with the passing of time. He needed to prolong and intensify the suffering of his victims because killing was not enough anymore and he started torturing them. The way he was caught is interesting because it resembles the way Al Capone was caught due to taxes. There were two things that bothered me in this book. One was the comparison of homosexuality to pedophilia, sadism and necrophilia. The other was the condescending way of portraying handicapped people. That's why it didn't get 4 stars. Este es un cómic que parodia a los cómics mismos, y la verdad que no me imaginé que iba a ser tan "cómico" (nunca mejor dicho). Muchos de los personajes ridiculizan en cierta forma a los superhéroes clásicos, pero está hecho de una forma que no llega a ofender al fan. El humor es inteligente, incisivo e irónico.  Paralelamente tenemos la historia del personaje principal, un hombre común y corriente, sin poderes, que odia a los superhéroes y se dedica a atraparlos por un trauma de la infancia (¿les suena?). Trabaja como cazarrecompensas en busca de los ídolos del pueblo pero es un desastre en lo que hace. En su vida "normal", Duke es un fracasado que vive con un perrito tierno y está seguro de que el hijo de su exmujer es suyo, cuando es físicamente evidente de que es igual al hombre con el que lo engañó.  Me pareció muy original la idea del antihéroe que no es un villano y está desprovisto de poderes y para mí esta historia debería continuar en una serie porque no hay nada parecido en el mercado.  Acaba de salir a la venta en inglés, así que no sé si se llegará a traducir al español en algún momento.  Estrellas: 4/5  Idioma original: inglés  Idioma de lectura: inglés Editorial: T Pub Edición: ebook (recibido de Netgalley a cambio de una reseña honesta). Fecha de publicación: 10/01/2017	I have to admit I didn't imagine this being so funny because I didn't expect it to be comic that is a satire on comics themselves. It is filled with clever, witty and ironical humor mostly indirectly referencing Batman and Superman. Even the illustrations and aliases are funny. We experience  what the life of an anti-superhero with no powers whatsoever would be like. Add to that the fact that he works as a bounty hunter -and is disastrous at his job- for an agency that oddly isn't villainous. When he is not on a job he is a loser that lives with his cute dog and believes he has a kid that is in fact of the man his ex-wife cheated on him with. The idea is so innovative that it deserves to be turned into a series because I believe there is nothing like this in the market.
