Este libro es ideal para los fanáticos del misterio y que están buscando algo diferente. Es un thriller psicológico con tintes legales y una atmósfera muy similar a la de El secreto de Donna Tartt. El estilo de escritura es atrapante y hace que uno quiera saber cómo se va a desarrollar la historia, principalmente debido al elemento misterioso que se insinúa a lo largo del libro. Nota: cuando solicité este libro no sabía que formaba parte de otro libro, y que la "autora" en realidad es un personaje de ese mismo libro. Eso me pareció muy original porque es algo que nunca leí y ni siquiera escuché antes acerca de un libro. Esta colección me recuerda a La cámara sangrienta de Angela Carter porque está compuesta de cuentos de hadas oscuros y originales con un giro feminista (incluso algunas versiones de cuentos conocidos). El estilo de escritura es hermoso y muy poético. La mayoría de las historias no me convencieron, pero haber leído este libro hizo que descubriera una nueva autora y que me interesara en leer más de su trabajo por la belleza de la escritura. Además, este libro tiene algunos de los títulos más lindos que leí en mi vida. Mis favoritos fueron: Dresses, Three. Su madre es una modista que es vendida y revendida entre mujeres ricas para que haga vestidos para ellas. Por ese motivo viajan mucho y no tienen un lugar al que puedan llamar hogar. La venden una vez más a una familia adinerada y, en ese castillo, una gobernanta le enseña al  niño a leer. A Cerridwen le encargan que cree tres vestidos muy especiales para la temporada. Dichos vestidos va a usarlos la misma edad que ella: 17 años. Aurora, la joven, le ofrece hacer un trato: si cumple exactamente con lo que se le pide, la liberará a ella y a su hijo y se asegurará de que nunca les falte nada y que no tengan que trabajar nunca más en sus vidas. Primer vestido: plumas de pavo real. Segundo vestido: alas de mariposa. Tercer vestido: palabras. Cerridwen no necesita hacer bosquejos, tomar notas o medidas porque cobran forma en su mente. Todos los vestidos parecen estar vivos porque ella es una bruja, y se debilita tras cada vestido. The writing is beautiful and very poetic. The majority of the stories didn't quite convince me, but this read definitely helped me discover a new author whose work I'm looking forward to continue reading because of the magnificent writing style, tone and pace. Also, this book contains some of the most beautiful story titles I've ever read. My favorites were: Dresses, Three. His mother is a seamstress and she was sold and resold amongst rich women to make dresses for them. Therefore, they both travel a lot and don't have an actual place to call home. She is once again sold to a wealthy family and, in their castle, a governess teaches the boy to read. Cerridwen is asked to create three very special dresses for the season, which will be work by a girl who is 17, just like her. She offers Aurora to make a deal: if she delivers exactly what she is being asked, Aurora will free her and make sure she and her son never have to work ever again. First dress: peacock feathers. Second dress: butterfly wings. Third dress: words. Cerridwen doesn't need to sketch, take notes or measurements. It all takes shape in her mind, and they all end up looking alive because she is a witch and is weakened after each dress. The Badger Bride. Gytha is a copyist and she has been commanded to work on an untitled, anonymous book. What makes the whole situation even stranger is the fact that the client's identity is undisclosed and the deadline is urgent. When she gets working on the book the ink seems to fade away upon sight and, although the text makes no sense, she reads a fragment aloud. Este libro es uno de los finalistas para el premio literario Man Booker del 2016 y es diferente a todo lo que leí este año. Es muy probable que esto se deba al formato utilizado porque está compuesto del relato del asesino, informes forenses, documentos judiciales y una evaluación psicológica. Se lee como si se tratara de un documental "basado en hechos reales". Cuenta la historia de un hombre que asesinó a tres personas en un mismo día, pero el misterio es develar el motivo y no el autor, porque sabemos desde el principio, y por boca del asesino, que él los asesinó, con la intención original de que el muerto fuera un hombre en particular. El lector nunca está seguro de si se trata de un narrador poco fiable o no, y eso es lo que mantiene el suspenso a lo largo del libro. ¿Está demente? ¿Dice la verdad? Si realmente está loco, lo que cuenta es lo que él realmente cree verdadero y está convencido de que los acontecimientos se desarrollaron de ese modo. Por lo tanto, queda a criterio del lector decidir a quién creerle y qué tomar por verdadero. It is comprised of the killer's account of the events, coroner's reports, trial documents, testimonies and a psychological evaluation. It reads like a true account of real events, somewhat like a documentary. It tells the story of a man that murdered three people on the same day but it's more a whydunit than a whodunit because we are told by Roderick himself that he has murdered them, with the original intention of killing one man in particular. The reader is never sure whether he is an unreliable narrator or not, which is what keeps the suspense throughout the book. Is he insane? What he is telling is true?  If he is indeed insane he believes what in contained in his account of the events, he truly thinks it happened that way. In the end, it is up to us readers to decide who and what to believe. Sirius - Jonathan Crown

Esta es la historia de un Fox Terrier y la forma en que cambia la vida de las personas con las que se va involucrando a lo largo de su vida. Me pareció genial que el autor hiciera que los protagonistas de esta historia fueran parte de una familia  nuclear con un buen pasar, porque lo diferencia de otros libros que se desarrollan durante la era de Hitler, y además demuestra que la gente talentosa e incluso los científicos tampoco estaban a salvo durante el régimen. Levi/Sirius/Hansi me hizo acordar todo el tiempo a Uggie de la película El Artista, y la atmósfera del libro mantuvo ese aire de los años 30, especialmente la Época Dorada de Hollywood. Al ser una gran amante de los animales, particularmente de los perros, en algunas partes los pensamientos y reacciones de Levi me llegaron al corazón y se me humedecieron los ojos. Si amás a los perros te va a encantar este libro, pero "cuidado con el perro" , porque te va a hacer pasar de la risa a las lágrimas de una página a otra. I found it great that the author made the central family in the story an upper-class nuclear family, which sets it apart from other books set during Hitler's era, showing that no one, even scientists or talented people was safe from the regime. Levi/Sirius/Hansi reminded me of Uggie from the movie The Artist, and the whole book had a great portrayal of the 1930s- particularly Hollywood's Golden Age. Some parts with Levi's thoughts and reactions touched my heart, being a dog lover myself and almost got me to tears. If you are a dog person you will love this, but "beware of the dog", for it will make you go from laugh to tears in the turn of a page. Esta versión moderna de la leyenda de Orfeo y Eurídice es ideal para quienes disfruten de historias oscuras y extrañas con elementos mágicos. Kay es una acróbata que recibe una oferta para trabajar en un circo al aire libre en las calles de Québec. Su marido es traductor y, como puede trabajar en cualquier parte del mundo, sugiere que alarguen su luna de miel para que ella pueda hacer lo que le gusta. Kay ve en una vidriera un títere único y se enamora. Cada vez que pasa por esa tienda se detiene a mirarlo. Este lugar, con su puerta siempre cerrada, sus luces siempre apagadas y sin señal alguna de entradas o salidas, parece estar cerrada o incluso abandonada. Un día, cuando se iba, Kay no notó que su adorado muñeco de madera giró la cabeza para mirarla. En otra ocasión, Theo ve las luces prendidas  y se acerca pero, al intentar abrir la puerta, nota que está cerrada y las luces se apagan de repente. Tras una fiesta a altas horas de la noche, Kay nota que alguien la está siguiendo. Al toparse con la tienda de los títeres prueba el picaporte y, para su sorpresa, esta vez está abierto. Al despertarse, se encuentra transformada en un títere. Sus sentidos permanecen intactos pero no puede hablar y su memoria está algo dañada. Pero no está sola, porque allí hay otros como ella. Me gustó mucho que Theo sea traductor porque me puedo identificar con ese aspecto de su vida. Me parece genial que el lector pueda tener un pantallazo del proceso de traducción y de cómo, a veces, el texto que se está traduciendo tiene muchas cosas en común con la vida misma del traductor. Me recordó mucho a El imaginario del Dr. Parnassus (por el circo callejero y los personajes extravagantes), Toy Story (los títeres no pueden moverse en presencia de los humanos), Alicia en el país de las maravillas (hay varias referencias en el texto y ella se vuelve pequeña y luego grande), y por supuesto Pinocho (en este caso el alma se convierte en títere y no al revés). Every time she passes by she stops to look for him. With its door always closed, the lights always off,  and no one ever entering or leaving, the shop seems to be either closed or abandoned. One day, upon leaving, Kay fails to see her beloved wooden doll turn his head to watch her. On a different occasion, Theo sees the lights of the shop switched on but, upon trying the knob, he finds it locked and the lights suddenly go off again. While escaping a stalker after a late party, Kay finds herself at the door of the shop and, when she tries the knob, it turns. When she wakes up, she realizes she has been transformed into a puppet herself, with her senses intact, but unable to speak and struggling to remember. Yet she is not alone; there are others like her in the room. I really enjoyed the fact that Theo is a translator because I can relate to that aspect of his life. It is great to see a bit of the translation process and how, sometimes, what we are working on can have parallelisms with our own life. This work reminded me of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (street circus, extravagant characters), Toy Story (the puppets can't move while in the presence of humans), Alice 's Adventures in Wonderland (many references; getting small and then big), and of course Pinocchio (in this case the human soul becomes a puppet and not the other way around.) The Storykiller - Humfrey Hunter

Este libro cuenta la historia de un hombre que se gana la vida evitando que se filtren a la prensa los escándalos de gente poderosa. La idea me pareció interesante y original; definitivamente no se parecía a nada que hubiera leído antes. Es una lectura agradable porque es un texto rápido que está muy bien escrito y me dejaba con ganas de saber cómo iba a continuar la historia después de cada giro. Lo único que me molestó fue la relación romántica demasiado trillada y predecible porque, en mi opinión, no aporta nada a la historia. En cuanto al final, no era lo que yo esperaba después de tanto problema pero resultó ser lo suficientemente satisfactorio. It was an enjoyable fast read that was well written and kept me wanting to know how the story was going to continue after each twist and turn.  The only thing I didn't like was the clichéd romantic relationship that was oh so predictable and didn't quite add to the plot, at least not for me.  As for the ending, it wasn't what I was expecting after all that trouble, but was somewhat satisfying nonetheless. Antes que nada  quiero destacar que me enamoré de las páginas introductorias a cada capítulo. Tienen unas hermosas páginas en blanco y negro de estilo vintage que son reminiscentes al show de los años 60. Es increíble cómo lograron mantener el tono y la atmósfera del programa y darle una nueva perspectiva a conceptos que se hicieron en el show  uniéndolos con temáticas actuales. Las ilustraciones son hermosas y están pensadas específicamente para cada historia.  Debo confesar que las historias que menos me gustaron fueron las que no escribió Mark Rehner. Mis preferidas fueron: The Secret Over-Sharer. una activista anti tecnología aprende una lección acerca de lo que realmente significa estar "desconectada" anti-tech advocate learns what it really means to be off the grid. Un par de citas:  * "Ya no nos satisface el solo hecho de HACER algo o EXPERIMENTAR algo nosotros mismos. They've done a wonderful job keeping its the tone and atmosphere, as well as revisiting and reimagining older themes and situations in addition to tackling more current ones as well. The illustrations are amazing and, more importantly, perzonalized to each story. I have to say that the stories I liked the least were the ones that were not written by Mark Rehner. My favorites were: The Secret Over-Sharer. An anti-tech advocate learns what it really means to be "off the grid". Some quotes:  * "We're not satisfied just DOING anything or EXPERIENCING anything ourselves anymore. It's like nothing EXISTS for us if we don't post something about it or share it." * "[...] You don't need social media to live your life. Experience it for yourself." It's All In How You Frame It. A solitary millionaire literally gets a view of the world and the true essence of people. Omnia - Laura Gallego

Leí tanto el libro en idioma original (que me encantó) como la traducción al inglés de Jordi Castells (que no me convenció por los cambios de sentido y la falta de ilustraciones presentes en el original). Siempre me gusta hacer comparaciones como referencia y, en este caso, me pareció una mezcla entre Toy Story (por la clase de obstáculos, aventuras y compañerismo), Monsters Inc. (por algunos de los personajes y la descripción de Omnia) y un toque Harry Potter (por ciertos aspectos mágicos). Quiero felicitar a la autora por el gran trabajo al crear un mundo complejo y completo en tan pocas páginas. A la historia no le falta nada. También me pareció interesante la combinación de mensajes y moralejas importantes con referencias indirectas a un mundo utópico que en realidad es una especie de dictadura. Eso da la oportunidad a los lectores de que, a medida que vayan creciendo y releyendo el libro, vayan descubriendo detalles que antes no habían notado y lo puedan analizar de otra forma. Las ilustraciones son muy tiernas y a la vez no tan infantiles, por lo que amplía el rango de edades de los lectores potenciales y ayuda a visualizar mejor el mundo y las criaturas extrañas de la historia. I have to disclaim that I had read the original Spanish book prior to reading this translated edition. Being a translator myself, I was curious to be able to "analyze" the translation in a way.  Regarding the story itself I thought the author did an amazing job at being able to construct such a complex and complete world in such a short book. The story lacks nothing at all. As for the translation, I found unnecessary changes of meaning and omissions that caused the tone of the story and some hidden plays on words to get lost in translation. Also, I think it was a bad decision to cut the beautiful illustrations included in the original, them being vital to better understand this beautiful  and strange world and characters. This is as a mix between Toy Story (because of the challenges, adventures and friendship), Monsters Inc. (because of some characters and Omnia itself) and a little bit of Harry Potter (because of certain magical aspects). Another interesting point was the combination of messages and morals coupled with hints to the of a seemingly Utopian world that is in fact a sort of regime.  That aspect allows readers to find new content and meaning when they reread it as they grow older. The original Spanish version is definitely a new addition to my recommendations list!
