Monet: The Early Years

I'd like to start this review why saying that I believe this is the most comprehensive book on Monet's life and work.
Although I'm nothing close to a Monet expert, I have read a fair share about him and his art. However, this book includes many facts that throw light on some aspects, and even  information I did not know.
This is ideal for any person interested in Monet —from first-timers to scholars— because of the complete and diverse information regarding his life and times.
On a different yet similar note, should you happen to have the opportunity to experience the exhibition in person, I would highly recommend you do so. If not because you like Monet, at least for the historical relevance of the event itself.

Timekeeper - Tara Sim

Danny es la persona más joven en convertirse en mecánico. En este mundo victoriano los mecánicos están a cargo del mantenimiento y la reparación de los relojes que controlan el tiempo en todo el mundo. Si hay algún falla en  uno del los relojes, el territorio correspondiente sufre las consecuencias. Por ejemplo,  hace tres años que su padre está atrapado en una ciudad "detenida" por un problema con el reloj en el que estaba trabajando. La parte más original y emocionante es el hecho de que cada reloj tiene su propio espíritu, pero muy rara vez se dejan ver. Sin embargo, durante un trabajo Danny conoce al de Enfield y termina sintiendo cosas por él, si bien sabe que está prohibido enamorarse de espíritus relojeros. Parece que va a ser una trilogía, cosa que para mí no tiene mucho sentido porque el final fue satisfactorio y no me parece necesaria siquiera una secuela . No obstante, me encantaría leer más acerca de este mundo. In this Victorian world mechanics are the ones in charge of repairing the clocks that control time all over the world. If something is wrong with one of the clocks, it has an effect on its corresponding territory. For instance, his father has been trapped for the last three years in a "Stopped" town because of a problem with the clock he was working on. There also are mythological sections about Chronos paralelling the events of the story. The most original and exciting aspect is the fact that each clock has its own spirit but they don't tend to make themselves visible. Yet, while on a job, Danny meets Enfield's and ends up having feelings for him, although he knows it is forbidden to fall in love with a clock spirit. It seems it's going to be a trilogy, which doesn't make much sense to me, since it was nicely wrapped and even a sequel seems uncalled for. Nevertheless, I'd love to read more about this world. Esta es una colección de ensayos muy interesante y completa que recopila los mejores y más interesantes ensayos de uno de los especialistas más relevantes en lo respectivo a estudios shakesperianos. La colección está dividida en: 1) Influencias: disfruté en gran medida leer acerca de Shakespeare desde un enfoque como un hombre europeo y no simplemente inglés como de costumbre. 2) Ensayos sobre obras en particular: cada ensayo se enfoca en analizar ciertas piezas individualmente. Esta parte es la que contiene más hechos y aspectos analizado ya conocidos. No obstante, para una persona que recién comienza a adentrarse en esta clase de ensayos, esta sección es un buen comienzo por el amplio espectro de temas que se tocan. Además, debe tenerse en cuenta que hace 400 años que se viene estudiando a Shakespeare, por lo que es comprensible que a esta altura ya ni aparezca mucho material nuevo sobre el tema. 3) Shakespeare en el teatro: estos ensayos abordan aspectos específicos del proceso que implica montar en escena sus obras, y se concentra la atención en el tema del género (hombres encarnando personajes femeninos). Esta parte es la que me pareció más interesante porque aportaba nueva información y perspectivas que no se me habían ocurrido antes. 4) Textos shakesperianos: aquí se habla de los formatos y versiones de las piezas. Este último grupo de ensayos no es para mí porque no me interesa mucho lo respectivo a formatos, edición y aspectos monetarios. Sin embargo, el contenido me pareció interesante como texto con una descripción profunda si se lo piensa como apuntado a un público que busca saber más de esos temas. The collection is divided into: 1) Shakespearean Influences, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Shakespeare seen on a European man, rather than just English as he is usually viewed. 2) Essays on Particular Works, in which each essay focuses on analyzing given pieces individually. This was the part that contained the most part of well-known facts and analysis. However, for a newcomer to this field of essays it provides a broad spectrum of topics to start with. Also, it must be taken into account the fact that Shakespeare has been studied and analyzed for four centuries. Hence, it is understandable that there won't appear much new material on the subject. 3) Shakespeare in Theatre, which tackle the theme of specific aspects of the staging process, mainly concentrating on the matter of gender and roles (men playing female characters). This section I found to be the most interesting because it provided new knowledge and perspectives that hadn't crossed my mind before. 4) Shakespeare's Text, which talk about formats, and versions of the plays. This last set wasn't  my cup of tea, because I am not much interested in formatting, editing, and monetary matters. Nevertheless, the content read as an interesting and in-depth depiction for those interesting in said subjects. Having that said, I feel there is a great variety of themes, content, styles and approaches and, therefore, there is something for anyone interested in literary criticism on William Shakespeare's work. Dean Koontz's Frankenstein: Storm Surge

En esta reversión contemporánea de Frankenstein, el Dr. continuó generando más criaturas y, además, comenzó a viajar a un mundo paralelo a través de un espejo. Suena similar a Alicia a través del espejo, ¿no? También tiene una especie de santuario debajo de su laboratorio, donde están ocultos sus fracasos. Ha intentado crear una mujer "perfecta" para sí mismo y lo ha conseguido. Ella es la protagonista y es el quinto intento de acompañante de Frnakenstein. Obviamente la descuida y maltrata, por lo que ella quiere investigar qué es lo que esconde en el sótano. Su secuaz es Karloff, mi personale preferido. Él es lo que queda de uno de los hombres descuartizados: una cabeza parlante y una mano rebelde que tiene mente propia. Parace increíble que esta extraña mezcla entre Frankenstein, Alicia  a través del espejo y The Walking Deadamazingly funcione muy bien. He has been trying to create a "perfect" woman for himself, and he has succeeded in doing so. She's the main character and is the fifth one of his manufactured companions. He obviously neglects and mistreats her, that is the reason why she wants to find out what he is hiding down there. Her sidekick is Karloff, my favorite character; the last remains of one of the dismemebered men: a disembodied talking head and a rebel hand with a mind of its own. This is a strange mix of Frankenstein -of course-, Through the Looking-Glass and The Walking Dead that amazingly works together. Esta es una reedición del una de las primeras novelas gráficas (1940 ) que se realizaban mediante linograbado (un proceso extenso y complicado). Muda, esta novela retrata una época y, al mismo tiempo, expresa un mensaje  social a través del arte. Está incluido un recuento de la vida de Patri en el que se habla de que no terminó la escuela primaria. No obstante, fue un autodidacta muy inteligente y culto (era bien versado en arte, filosofía y política). Giacomo creó esta increíble novela para contribuir con el movimiento sindicalista, valiéndose del contraste entre las vidas de los trabajadores de clase media y las de los de clase baja. Más adelante inauguró una escuela de arte dirigida a la clase trabajadora para que pudieran disfrutar del arte como una experiencia liberadora y una distracción de la vida obrera. En este caso es verdad que "una imagen dice más que mil palabras" (o incluso más). Les dejo dos linograbados (también hay en blanco y negro en el libro). Agrego, además mi traducción de una descripción sacada de la introducción de 1940. It was one of the first graphic novels ever made and it was crafted through linocuts (a complicated and lengthy process). Wordless, it portrays an epoch by expressing a social message through art.  We are given background of Patri's life and times where we learn that he didn't finish primary school but was an extremely intelligent and cultured man. He was self taught on art (at first), architecture, philosophy and politics.  Giacomo created this greatly autobiographical novel to contribute to the union movement, contrasting the lives of middle class and lower class workers at the time. Later on, he opened an art school aimed at working people. The purpose was for them to enjoy art as a liberating experience and as a distraction from everyday labor life. In this case, a picture is definitely worth a thousand words—or more. I'll leave some linocuts (there are black and white ones as well) and a description from the 1940 introduction: "Into the darkness of depression it throws light; the tragic dissonances it resolves; and to the dead of home it brings resurrection." En esta novela gráfica podemos disfrutar de un humor inteligente e irónico en el que se representa a las mujeres a través de la historia mediante los pensamientos aberrantes de aclamados genios en lo respectivo a la condición femenina.  Me encantaría que este libro fuera traducido al español y que se editaran más libros dentro de esta línea de pensamiento. Les dejo un ejemplo del contenido con mi traducción debajo de la imagen: "En ocasiones, las mujeres lograban aprender un idioma en el extranjero y retornaban tituladas como doctoras, pero eso sólo prueba que las mujeres generan problemas apenas se las deja salir al mundo". Omnia - Laura Gallego

Leí tanto el libro en idioma original (que me encantó) como la traducción al inglés de Jordi Castells (que no me convenció por los cambios de sentido y la falta de ilustraciones presentes en el original). Siempre me gusta hacer comparaciones como referencia y, en este caso, me pareció una mezcla entre Toy Story (por la clase de obstáculos, aventuras y compañerismo), Monsters Inc. (por algunos de los personajes y la descripción de Omnia) y un toque Harry Potter (por ciertos aspectos mágicos). Quiero felicitar a la autora por el gran trabajo al crear un mundo complejo y completo en tan pocas páginas. A la historia no le falta nada. También me pareció interesante la combinación de mensajes y moralejas importantes con referencias indirectas a un mundo utópico que en realidad es una especie de dictadura. Eso da la oportunidad a los lectores de que, a medida que vayan creciendo y releyendo el libro, vayan descubriendo detalles que antes no habían notado y lo puedan analizar de otra forma. Las ilustraciones son muy tiernas y a la vez no tan infantiles, por lo que amplía el rango de edades de los lectores potenciales y ayuda a visualizar mejor el mundo y las criaturas extrañas de la historia. I have to disclaim that I had read the original Spanish book prior to reading this translated edition. Being a translator myself, I was curious to be able to "analyze" the translation in a way.  Regarding the story itself I thought the author did an amazing job at being able to construct such a complex and complete world in such a short book. The story lacks nothing at all. As for the translation, I found unnecessary changes of meaning and omissions that caused the tone of the story and some hidden plays on words to get lost in translation. Also, I think it was a bad decision to cut the beautiful illustrations included in the original, them being vital to better understand this beautiful  and strange world and characters. This is as a mix between Toy Story (because of the challenges, adventures and friendship), Monsters Inc. (because of some characters and Omnia itself) and a little bit of Harry Potter (because of certain magical aspects). Another interesting point was the combination of messages and morals coupled with hints to the of a seemingly Utopian world that is in fact a sort of regime.  That aspect allows readers to find new content and meaning when they reread it as they grow older. The original Spanish version is definitely a new addition to my recommendations list!
