The Complete Masters of the Poster

ENGLISH REVIEW

I have always loved Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's work ever since we studied him in Elementary -primary- School. However, I have to confess I had no idea that there was such a thing as 'Masters of the Poster' until I came across this book. I immediately applied in the hope I would get the opportunity to review it and here I am.
Surprisingly, Toulouse-Lautrec is my favorite artist from that period and style no more, because thanks to this publication I was able to discover some of my new favorite 'Masters', such as Chéret, Grasset, de Feure, Mucha, Steinlen, The Beggarstaffs, Roedel and Berthon (in that order.)
This book is essential for everyone; from the lay person like me that likes -or is interested in- the period and style to the collector, because this publication's design allows for the works to be fully appreciated in their entirety.

Admiro el trabajo de Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec desde que lo estudiamos en la primaria. Sin embargo, debo confesar que no tenía la menor idea de la existencia de "Los maestros del Cartel" hasta que me crucé con este libro. Inmediatamente envíe la solicitud con la esperanza de que me permitieran leerlo para reseña y, por suerte, acá estoy.
Es increíble, pero Tousolouse-Lautrec ya no es mi artista preferido de ese período y estilo, porque gracias a esta publicación descubrí nuevos "Maestros" preferidos como lo son Chéret, Grasset, de Feure, Mucha, Steinlen, The Beggarstaffs, Roedel y Berthon (en ese orden).
Este libro es esencial para cualquier persona: desde los legos, como yo, a quienes les gusta o interesa ese período o estilo hasta los coleccionistas, porque el estilo en el que están publicados los carteles permite disfrutar completamente de las obras en su plenitud, ya que se pueden apreciar los detalles.

Este libro cuenta la interna de la Familia Manson con otros nombres y algunos cambios en los detalles de la historia. La lectura es rápida, fluida y atrapante, y eso genera la necesidad de seguir leyendo hasta el final. Para los que no saben nada acerca de Charles Manson, fue el líder de un culto que atraía principalmente a mujeres y le "lavó el cebero" a sus seguidores para convencerlos de cometer una de las matanzas más sangrientas y brutales de la historia. Las mentes de los asesinos es un tema que interesó siempre en el sentido de querer intentar comprender por qué y cómo pasaron a convertirse en los monstruos que luego pasaron a ser, y Manson es uno de los personajes de los que más me gusta leer. En cuanto a la novela, la narrativa alterna entre Evie en el presente recordando lo que pasó, e Evie como adolescente en 1969 desde el pasado inmediato anterior a que ella se involucrara con el culto. La protagonista es una chica de catorce años cuyos padres están divorciados y no le prestan mucha atención, en especial su madre, con quien vive pero está más preocupada por conseguir una nueva pareja. Su padre vive lejos por lo que no tiene mucho contacto con él. Evie también termina aburriéndose de su única amiga tras haberse obsesionado con un grupo de chicas (del culto), particularmente centrada en una de aspecto "oscuro". No deja de pensar en ella y, un día, la vuelve a ver y la terminan invitando a ir con ellas a su "casa". Ahí conoce a Russell (Manson) y empieza a querer escaparse de su casa, motivo pro el cual termina enredada en las redes del culto a pesar de haber presenciado y vivido situaciones muy extrañas. Cline retrató muy bien la persona del líder, sobre todo las téncnicas de persuasión mediante las hcuales logra manipular de forma encubierta a los miembros de su grupo para lograr que hagan lo que él quiere. Me imagino a Manson manejándose de la misma forma. Asimismo, la atmósfera de la vida de la del culto me pareció muy real también, A veces hasta sentía que estaba junto a ellos mientras leía, Lamentablemente, sentí que a la historia le faltaba algo, pero no llego a discernir qué. La sentí incompleta en parte. Probablemente se deba a que el final no me convenció, seguramente porque no le vi sentido al uso de esa doble narrativa de tiempo para el final que eligió. Además, si bien disfruté mucho del ritmo, el estilo de escritura, la atmósfera y los personajes (salvo Evie), el hecho deque se trate de algo que la vida misma "escribió" y no fue realmente una idea de Cline. Tendiendo todo eso en cuenta me gustaría leer algo de su propia creación. Creo que aquellos que no hayan leído o visto tanto contenido sobre el tema como yo van a disfrutar mucho más este libro. Si te interesan los cultos y los asesinos, o incluso si esta clase de historias verdaderas te resultan demasiado fuertes, este libro es un buen primer paso hacia el tema. Solamente tenés que olvidarte de que está basado en un caso real. Y tampoco esperes que sea Retrato de una familia o algo parecido porque no hay que olvidarse de que es una novela. También tienen que tener en cuenta que hay algunas escenas gráficas y desagradables, particularmente sexuales, si bien aportan a la creación de la atmósfera y de los personajes. It is a quick and engrossing read that you don't want to put down. For those of you who don't know anything about Charles Manson, he was the cult leader who lured mostly women and brainwashed their minds to convince them go on one of the bloodiest and most disturbing and brutal killing sprees in history. The mind of a killer has always fascinated me in the sense that I want to try and understand what went wrong with them to turn into the person they became, and Manson is my favorite subject to read about. Now as for the novel, it alternates between Evie in the present day, remembering and recounting the events she went through as a teenager and her in 1969 from the immediate past before she got involved with the cult. The protagonist is a fourteen-year-old girl whose parents are divorced and don't pay much attention to her, particularly her mother who is more concerned with getting a new partner. Her father lives far from them, so she sees him very little. Evie also gets bored of her only friend after seeing a weird group of young women girls -particularly a gloomy one. She can't get her out of her own head. Then, one day she sees her again and is invited to come with them to their "house". There she meets Russell (a.k.a. Manson) and she longs escaping home and thus ends up wrapped up in the cult in spite of having gone through strange experiences there. Cline did a great job at portraying the leader, mainly because of the persuasive techniques through which he covertly manipulates people in order to get what he wants from them. I could see Manson acting the same way Russell did. On a similar note, the atmosphere of the life within the Manson cult seemed realistic as well, At times I could even feel like I was there with them, Sadly, I found the story a bit lacking, although I can't put my finger on what was it that was missing. It felt incomplete in a way. That is probably because the ending didn't work for me, mainly because the dual-time narrative didn't serve any purpose in the end. Also, although I thoroughly enjoyed the pace, atmosphere and characters -except for Evie- and the writing was great, the story is based on true events and people. Therefore, the story had already been "written" by life itself and it wasn't Cline's own creation. Taking that into account, I am looking forward to reading another book by her on an original idea of hers. I think that people who haven't read and watched as much content on the subject as I have will enjoy it even more. If you find cults and murderers interesting or even if you find real accounts on murders too much to handle, this book is a great first step into the subject. Just try to forget it was based on a true story. Also, don't expect it to be anything like Helter Skelter or any other biographical account, because this is a novel after all. Also, be aware that there are some graphic and grotesque scenes -particularly on the sexual aspect, but they do contribute to the atmosphere and portrayal of the characters. Si sos fanático de la película sin duda este manga tiene que formar parte de tu colección, porque esto es lo más cercano a un libro que se puede hacer sin perder la esencia y el espíritu de la peli. La historia no se modificó para nada, y las ilustraciones son prácticamente idénticas al original -salvo algunos paneles-, ¡e incluso incluyeron las canciones! What I didn't like: - Hubiera preferido que lo hicieran como cómic. No por el formato en sí, sino porque las expresiones orientales que se utilizan en los mangas perturba la atmósfera espeluznante tan característica de la película. - El personaje de Sally me pareció demasiado dramático por momentos, sobre todo por algunas expresiones exageradas. Nothing was left out. The storyline wasn't changed at all, the illustrations are practically identical to the original ones from the movie -except for some panels-, ¡and the songs are also included! What I didn't like: - I would've preferred it as a comic. Not because of the format, but due to some of the oriental expressions used in manga that disrupt the spooky atmosphere present throughout the original movie. - I found Sally's personality overly dramatized through exaggerated facial expressions. Danny es la persona más joven en convertirse en mecánico. En este mundo victoriano los mecánicos están a cargo del mantenimiento y la reparación de los relojes que controlan el tiempo en todo el mundo. Si hay algún falla en uno del los relojes, el territorio correspondiente sufre las consecuencias. Por ejemplo, hace tres años que su padre está atrapado en una ciudad "detenida" por un problema con el reloj en el que estaba trabajando. La parte más original y emocionante es el hecho de que cada reloj tiene su propio espíritu, pero muy rara vez se dejan ver. Sin embargo, durante un trabajo Danny conoce al de Enfield y termina sintiendo cosas por él, si bien sabe que está prohibido enamorarse de espíritus relojeros. Parece que va a ser una trilogía, cosa que para mí no tiene mucho sentido porque el final fue satisfactorio y no me parece necesaria siquiera una secuela . No obstante, me encantaría leer más acerca de este mundo. In this Victorian world mechanics are the ones in charge of repairing the clocks that control time all over the world. If something is wrong with one of the clocks, it has an effect on its corresponding territory. For instance, his father has been trapped for the last three years in a "Stopped" town because of a problem with the clock he was working on. There also are mythological sections about Chronos paralelling the events of the story. The most original and exciting aspect is the fact that each clock has its own spirit but they don't tend to make themselves visible. Yet, while on a job, Danny meets Enfield's and ends up having feelings for him, although he knows it is forbidden to fall in love with a clock spirit. It seems it's going to be a trilogy, which doesn't make much sense to me, since it was nicely wrapped and even a sequel seems uncalled for. Nevertheless, I'd love to read more about this world. Este libro es ideal para los fanáticos del misterio y que están buscando algo diferente. Es un thriller psicológico con tintes legales y una atmósfera muy similar a la de El secreto de Donna Tartt. El estilo de escritura es atrapante y hace que uno quiera saber cómo se va a desarrollar la historia, principalmente debido al elemento misterioso que se insinúa a lo largo del libro. Nota: cuando solicité este libro no sabía que formaba parte de otro libro, y que la "autora" en realidad es un personaje de ese mismo libro. Note: when I requested it for review, I didn't know it was a book that was part of another book and that the "author" was in fact a character in that same book. Esta colección de poemas es variada pero, lamentablemente, no es mi estilo. Si bien hay contiene algunos poemas hermosos, la mayoría no me generó ninguna sensación o pensamiento e incluso muchos resultaban desagradables de leer (en especial por los personajes y/o situaciones demasiado sexualizadas en un tipo de texto que no los ameritaba). Otra cosa que no me gustó fue que hay dos "figuritas repetidas". A lo que me refiero con esto es que dos secciones de dos poemas aparecen varias páginas más adelante como si se tratara de otros poemas cortos cuando ya habían aparecido como parte de otros. Si es todo esto es algo que no te molesta e incluso te gusta leer, te invito a que lo leas. Este libro es una muy buena guía para encontrar exhibiciones de arte en la ciudad de Nueva York y, a la vez, ofrece un complemento de historia del arte en sí en "la gran manzana". Además de las pequeñas reproducciones que hacen de esta una lectura hermosa, la estructura en que está escrito simplifica la navegación de su contenido, principalmente gracias a que está dividido en secciones específicas: 1) Obras de arte famosas. ejemplo: La persistencia de la memoria, Campo de trigo con cipreses, LOVE... 2) Artistas neoyorkinos: en esta sección el foco está puesto sobre los genios que vivieron y/o trabajaron en NY, como Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock. Jeff Koons... 3) Movimientos neoyorkinos: en esta parte se detallan las raíces del arte en esta ciudad, principalmente los movimientos que surgieron allí y exhibiciones importantes. Algunas son pop art, aexpresionismo abstacto, fotografía, feminismo... 4) Lugares para disfrutar del arte en Nueva York: esta última sección actúa como guía de recomendaciones: museos, galerías, arte público, sitios históricos, y todo lo relacionado al Arte que se pueda encontrar en esta ciudad. A su vez, esta sección está subdividida por barrio para que a los lectores nos resulte más cómodo y fácil planear nuestros itinerarios. E.g.: The Persistence of Memory, Wheat Field with Cypresses, LOVE... 2) New York Artists: this one focuses on artistic geniuses who lived and worked in NYC, such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock. Jeff Koons... 3) New York Movements: this part goes into detail about the roots of art in the city, concentrating on art movements and relevant exhibitions that emerged in New York, such as pop art, abstract expressionism, conceptual art, photography, feminism... 4) Where to See Art in New York: this last section constitutes a guide to recommended museums, galleries, public art, historical sites and anything art-related that can be found in New York. This section is cleverly subdivided into smaller sections by neighborhood for the readers to better plan their schedules. I've always wanted to visit NYC, one of the main purposes being to visit its amazing galleries and exhibitions. Esta es una muy buena idea original para una historia que no se parece a nada que haya leído antes. El personaje principal despierta en plena calle sin recuerdo alguno; ni siquiera sabe quién es. Se encuentra en una porción de Nueva Yoek que parece ser una isla flotante en el aire que fue arrancada del resto del mundo y se corta en seco en los bordes. No está solo, pero los otros están en su misma situación. Por una travesía que sale mal, se cae del borde del mundo y aterriza en una sección diferente que tiene las mismas características que la suya. Debido a ese incidente decide adoptar el nombre Faller (caedor). Luego descubre que hay muchos otros mundos y se arriesga a investigar varios con la esperanza de encontrar a la mujer cuya fotografía encontró en su bolsillo. Por otra parte tenemos la segunda historia "previa" que parece explicar qué es lo que está sucediendo en todos esos mundos y por qué. Esta es una novela postapocalíptica de ciencia ficción que es muy atrapante y es un buen comienzo para adentrarse en el género principalmente por la fluidez de la historia y la originalidad de la historia. It resembles nothing I've read. The main character wakes up in the middle of a street and doesn't remember anything, not even who he is. He finds himself on a portion of New York that seems to be a floating island that has been ripped from the rest of the world and stops in the borders. He's not alone, but the others are in the same situation as him. Because of a stunt gone wrong, he falls off the edge of the world and lands in a different section, with the same characteristics as his own and, for this reason, he adopts the name "Faller". He then discovers that there are multiple worlds, and he ventures to several of them, hoping to find the woman whose picture he found in his pocket. Then we have a second "previous" story that seems to explain what is happening in those worlds and why. A gripping post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that may well serve as an introduction to the genre because of its fluid writing and interesting story. Esta es una cruza entre crimen real y biografía que está muy bien realizada. Me gustó mucho que King prefiriera hacer que el foco no fueran los asesinos (si bien hay un relato detallado acerca de ellos y sus vidas) sino incluir un gran volumen de información nueva acerca de las víctimas, particularmente e la actriz Sharon Tate. I really appreciated the fact that King decided not to focus on the murderers -going into enough detail on the matter- but rather include plenty new information about the victims, particularly Sharon Tate. He talks about how the events impacted on the victims' families and there also is a part on what happened after the trial to those involved. The majority of the book is about Sharon and her life and showing who she really was, without victimizing her, Hopefully, this book will contribute to her being remembered as a sweet person and then-upcoming actress, and not as a celebrity who met her end by the hands of The Manson Family. Este libro trata sobre un futuro distópico en el que se ha descubierto una "fuente de la juventud" en forma de píldora que permite a las personas vivir cientos de años más. Sin embargo, y por supuesto, es cara y sólo pueden acceder a ella las personas de los más altos rangos y más adinerados. En la otra cara de la moneda tenemos a algunos rebeldes y también a un pequeño grupo de idealistas que buscan generar una revolución al lograr que esta píldora esté disponible para todo el mundo. El concepto sonaba genial, pero no me gustó la forma en que se lo desarrolló. Teniendo en cuenta que se trata de un libro de unas 100 páginas, todo lo que sucedía se sentía como apresurado y poco claro en algunos momentos. Creo que, de haber sido un poco más largo, se podrían haber desarrollado mejor tanto los personajes como el mundo en sí, y se habría llegado a un texto mucho más interesante y completo. It enables people to live hundreds of years longer but it of course expensive and thus only attainable by rich people. On the other side of the coin there are rebels but there also is a small group of idealists hoping to spark a revolution and make the Fix available to everyone. The premise of this book sounded great but I didn't enjoy how it was developed. Being only about 100 pages everything felt somewhat rushed and I believe I could have been more enjoyable had the world and characters been more developed in a longer read. What I did find was well depicted was the fact that should there be a scientific breakthrough as such, we, as a society, would most certainly distort its purpose and turn it into a business. Cuando empecé este libro no estaba al tanto de que estaba escrito como una novela de ficción acerca de la vida de Mileva y lo yo esperaba leer algo más biográfico. Siento que esa decisión le quitó seriedad al texto porque uno no sabe qué cosas son reales y cuáles fueron inventadas o modificadas para que quedaran mejor en esa clase de historia. La autora enfocó la historia en el cliché de "la mujer detrás del gran hombre" y me parece que este libro podría haber sido mucho más interesante si hubiera seguido la vida de Mileva independientemente de Einstein, en lugar de que él fuera el centro y que cada evento de la vida de ella pareciera girar en torno a él. Lamentablemente no obtuve lo que esperaba leer. Yo buscaba una historia inspiradora acerca de una mujer independiente con personalidad fuerte que logró entrar a la universidad y estudiar en el exterior en el 1800 en un establecimiento que en el que era la única estudiante femenina. También me sentí que la investigación no era muy confiable desde el punto en que la misma autora aclara que los hechos contenidos en el texto pueden o no ser exactos o incluso verdaderos. I feel like that was a wrong decision because it is impossible to know which facts are real and which have been modified or invented to better suit that kind of story, The author focused on the cliché of "the woman behind a great man" and I believe this book would have been far more interesting if it had followed Mileva's life separately from Einstein rather than using him as the center of the story around whom everything seemed to have happened. Unfortunately, I didn't get what I was hoping to read, which was an inspiring story about an independent woman with a strong personality who managed to get into College to study abroad in the 1800s being the only female student. I also felt that the research was not strong, because even the author herself states that much of what she is telling throughout the book may or may not be accurate or true. Esta es una hermosa novela gráfica en blanco y negro y "muda" llena de ilustraciones tiernas, particularmente los dos personajes principales. Seguimos al protagonista en una misión: encontrar gemas de colores para un fin inesperado que se revela en la última página. El concepto temático del blanco y negro mudo me hizo acordar mucho a Emigrantes de Shaun Tan y a White Collar de Giacomo Patri (enlace a la reseña más abajo).
