Wildwitch: Oblivion (Book 2) - Lene Kaaberbøl

When I requested this book for review I didn't realize it was part of a series. Therefore, I made sure I found a copy of the first one (Wildfire). This series is being compared to Harry Potter, which is an not quite right. While there is magic involved, the protagonist has nothing in common with Harry: she has a loving family in spite of her parents being divorced, her magical teaching comes from an aunt and her acquaintances from this magical world. The only two elements similar to Rowling's series are magical -or should I say mythological- beings and her apparently being 'the chosen one' - but in a different fashion.
I liked this second installment  better than the first one because here we see Clara grow -both as a young woman and as a witch- and we get more worldbuilding, which was what I would have liked to have seen more in the previous one.
Having that said, I believe this is a great series for younger children to read before diving into the Harry Potter world, mainly because the language, writing style and concept are more approachable for that age range. On a different note, I also think there should be more children books originally written in languages other than English, Spanish or French in the market, because there are some gems that hadn't been made available to readers of said languages, and variety is always welcome.

Cuando solicité este libro para hacer una reseña no me di cuenta de que era parte de una serie. Por ende, me aseguré de conseguir el primer libro (Wildfire) para leerlo primero. Se compara erróneamente a esta serie con Harry Potter porque, si bien hay magia, la protagonista no tiene nada en común con Harry: sus padres están separados pero tiene una familia que la ama, su fuente de aprendizaje mágico viene de su tía y de sus conocidos del mundo mágico. Los únicos dos elementos similares a los de la serie de Rowling son los seres mágicos (o mejor dicho mitológicos), y que ella parecería ser una especie de "elegida", pero por un motivo muy diferente.

Me gustó más esta segunda entrega de la serie que la primera porque vemos a Clara crecer como joven adulta y como bruja, y también hay mucho más desarrollo del mundo en sí; cosa que me hubiera gustado ver más en el anterior.

Espero que alguna editorial traiga la traducción al español para estos lares porque creo que esta es una muy buena serie para que los chicos más jóvenes lean antes de sumergirse en el mundo de Harry Potter. El lenguaje, el estilo y el contenido es más accesible para esa rango etario. Además me parece que debería haber un mercado más grande de libro para niños originalmente escritos en idiomas que no sean inglés, español o francés, porque la variedad de estilos siempre viene bien y estoy segura de que hay algunos tesoros escondidos a los que ese público no ha tenido alcance.

The Language of Dying - Sarah Pinborough

This beautifully written story has a magical realism element, but that doesn't affect the realist sadness  the reader experiences throughout the whole book, mainly thanks to the heart-wrenching truthfulness in Sarah Pinborough's impeccable narrative style.

Prepare yourselves for an emotional ride that will take you places in your memory you hadn't revisited in a while and even experience feelings, decisions and reactions you have never had to go through, but living them first hand while reading this captivating story.

Without leaving the house where the story starts with a woman next to her father in his deathbed, the narrative moves constantly backwards and forward filling in the gaps presented in the first chapters. 

This is the best true-to-life family drama I have read this year, in spite of it having a significantly strange magical element.

En esta historia escrita de manera hermosa hay un elemento de realismo mágico, pero eso no afecta la tristeza realista que el lector experimenta a lo largo del libro, principalmente gracias a la veracidad desgarradora del estilo narrativo impecable de Sarah Pinborough.
Prepárense para una montaña rusa emocional que los llevará a lugares de sus recuerdos que hacía mucho no visitaban, e incluso a experimentar sentimientos, decisiones, y reacciones por las que nunca les tocó pasar, pero sintiéndolas en primera persona mientras van leyendo esta historia cautivante.
La  historia comienza con una mujer sentada junto a su padre en su lecho de muerte. Sin moverse de ese lugar, la historia va constantemente hacia atrás y hacia adelante para llenar los vacíos que se presentan en la primera parte del libro.
Este es el mejor drama familiar que sentí verdadero este año, a pesar de que contiene un elemento mágico extraño.

The Girls (Las chicas) - Emma Cline

Este libro cuenta la interna de la Familia Manson con otros nombres y algunos cambios en los detalles de la historia. La lectura es rápida, fluida y atrapante, y eso genera la necesidad de seguir leyendo hasta el final. Para los que no saben nada acerca de Charles Manson, fue el líder de un culto que atraía principalmente a mujeres y le "lavó el cebero" a sus seguidores para convencerlos de cometer una  de las matanzas más sangrientas y brutales de la historia. Las mentes de los asesinos es un tema que interesó siempre en el sentido de querer intentar comprender por qué y cómo pasaron a convertirse en los monstruos que luego pasaron a ser, y Manson es uno de los personajes de los que más me gusta leer. En cuanto a la novela, la narrativa alterna entre Evie en el presente recordando lo que pasó, e Evie como adolescente en 1969 desde el pasado inmediato anterior a que ella se involucrara con el culto. La protagonista es una chica de catorce años cuyos padres están divorciados y no le prestan mucha atención, en especial su madre, con quien vive pero está más preocupada por conseguir una nueva pareja. Su padre vive lejos por lo que no tiene mucho contacto con él. Evie también termina aburriéndose de su única amiga tras haberse obsesionado con un grupo de chicas (del culto), particularmente centrada en una de aspecto "oscuro". No deja de pensar en ella y, un día, la vuelve a ver y la terminan invitando a ir con ellas a su "casa". Ahí conoce a Russell (Manson) y empieza a querer escaparse de su casa, motivo pro el cual termina enredada en las redes del culto a pesar de haber presenciado y vivido situaciones muy extrañas. Cline retrató muy bien la persona del líder, sobre todo las téncnicas de persuasión mediante las hcuales logra manipular de forma encubierta a los miembros de su grupo para lograr que hagan lo que él quiere. Me imagino a Manson manejándose de la misma forma. Asimismo, la atmósfera de la vida de la del culto me pareció muy real también, A veces hasta sentía que estaba junto a ellos mientras leía, Lamentablemente, sentí que a la historia le faltaba algo, pero no llego a discernir qué. La sentí incompleta en parte. Probablemente se deba a que el final no me convenció, seguramente porque no le vi sentido al uso de esa doble narrativa de tiempo para el final que eligió. Además, si bien disfruté mucho del ritmo, el estilo de escritura, la atmósfera y los personajes (salvo Evie), el hecho deque se trate de algo que la vida misma "escribió" y no fue realmente una idea de Cline. Tendiendo todo eso en cuenta me gustaría leer algo de su propia creación. Creo que aquellos que no hayan leído o visto tanto contenido sobre el tema como yo van a disfrutar mucho más este libro. Si te interesan los cultos y los asesinos, o incluso si esta clase de historias verdaderas te resultan demasiado fuertes, este libro es un buen primer paso hacia el tema. Solamente tenés que olvidarte de que está basado en un caso real. Y tampoco esperes que sea Retrato de una familia o algo parecido porque no hay que olvidarse de que es una novela. También tienen que tener en cuenta que hay algunas escenas gráficas y desagradables, particularmente sexuales, si bien aportan a la creación de la atmósfera y de los personajes. It is a quick and engrossing read that you don't want to put down. For those of you who don't know anything about Charles Manson, he was the cult leader who lured mostly women and brainwashed their minds to convince them go on one of the bloodiest and most disturbing and brutal killing sprees in history. The mind of a killer has always fascinated me in the sense that I want to try and understand what went wrong with them to turn into the person they became, and Manson is my favorite subject to read about. Now as for the novel, it alternates between Evie in the present day, remembering and recounting the events she went through as a teenager and her in 1969 from the immediate past before she got involved with the cult. The protagonist is a fourteen-year-old girl whose parents are divorced and don't pay much attention to her, particularly her mother who is more concerned with getting a new partner. Her father lives far from them, so she sees him very little. Evie also gets bored of her only friend after seeing a weird group of young women girls -particularly a gloomy one. She can't get her out of her own head. Then, one day she sees her again and is invited to come with them to their "house". There she meets Russell (a.k.a. Manson) and she longs escaping home and thus ends up wrapped up in the cult in spite of having gone through strange experiences there. Cline did a great job at portraying the leader, mainly because of the persuasive techniques through which he covertly manipulates people in order to get what he wants from them. I could see Manson acting the same way Russell did. On a similar note, the atmosphere of the life within the Manson cult seemed realistic as well, At times I could even feel like I was there with them, Sadly, I found the story a bit lacking, although I can't put my finger on what was it that was missing. It felt incomplete in a way. That is probably because the ending didn't work for me, mainly because the dual-time narrative didn't serve any purpose in the end. Also, although I thoroughly enjoyed the pace, atmosphere and characters -except for Evie- and the writing was great, the story is based on true events and people. Therefore, the story had already been "written" by life itself and it wasn't Cline's own creation. Taking that into account, I am looking forward to reading another book by her on an original idea of hers. I think that people who haven't read and watched as much content on the subject as I have will enjoy it even more. If you find cults and murderers interesting or even if you find real accounts on murders too much to handle, this book is a great first step into the subject. Just try to forget it was based on a true story. Also, don't expect it to be anything like Helter Skelter or any other biographical account, because this is a novel after all. Also, be aware that there are some graphic and grotesque scenes -particularly on the sexual aspect, but they do contribute to the atmosphere and portrayal of the characters. Disney Manga Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas - Jun Asuka

Si sos fanático de la película sin duda este manga tiene que formar parte de tu colección, porque esto es lo más cercano a un libro que se puede hacer sin perder la esencia y el espíritu de la peli. La historia no se modificó para nada, y las ilustraciones son prácticamente idénticas al original -salvo algunos paneles-, ¡e incluso incluyeron las canciones! What I didn't like: - Hubiera preferido que lo hicieran como cómic. No por el formato en sí, sino porque las expresiones orientales que se utilizan en los mangas perturba la atmósfera espeluznante tan característica de la película. - El personaje de Sally me pareció demasiado dramático por momentos, sobre todo por algunas expresiones exageradas. What I didn't like: - I would've preferred it as a comic. Faller - Will McIntosh

Esta es una muy buena idea original para una historia que no se parece a nada que haya leído antes. El personaje principal despierta en plena calle sin recuerdo alguno; ni siquiera sabe quién es. Se encuentra en una porción de Nueva Yoek que parece ser una isla flotante en el aire que fue arrancada del resto del mundo y se corta en seco en los bordes. No está solo, pero los otros están en su misma situación. Por una travesía que sale mal, se cae del borde del mundo y aterriza en una sección diferente que tiene las mismas características que la suya. Debido a ese incidente decide adoptar el nombre Faller (caedor). Luego descubre que hay muchos otros mundos y se arriesga a investigar varios con la esperanza de encontrar a la mujer cuya fotografía encontró en su bolsillo. Por otra parte tenemos la segunda historia "previa" que parece explicar qué es lo que está sucediendo en todos esos mundos y por qué. Esta es una novela postapocalíptica de ciencia ficción que es muy atrapante y es un buen comienzo para adentrarse en el género principalmente por la fluidez de la historia y la originalidad de la historia. It resembles nothing I've read. The main character wakes up in the middle of a street and doesn't remember anything, not even who he is. Because of a stunt gone wrong, he falls off the edge of the world and lands in a different section, with the same characteristics as his own and, for this reason, he adopts the name "Faller". He then discovers that there are multiple worlds, and he ventures to several of them, hoping to find the woman whose picture he found in his pocket. Then we have a second "previous" story that seems to explain what is happening in those worlds and why. A gripping post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that may well serve as an introduction to the genre because of its fluid writing and interesting story. Sharon Tate and the Manson Murders - Greg King

Esta es una cruza entre crimen real y biografía que está muy bien realizada. Me gustó mucho que King prefiriera hacer que el foco no fueran los asesinos (si bien hay un relato detallado acerca de ellos y sus vidas) sino incluir un gran volumen de información nueva acerca de las víctimas, particularmente e la actriz Sharon Tate. Se relata el impacto que los eventos tuvieron en los familiares de las víctimas e incluso se habla de qué sucedió luego de finalizado el juicio con aquellos involucrados. Gran parte del libro trata sobre Sharon y su vida, y se la muestra como realmente era, sin victimizarla. I really appreciated the fact that King decided not to focus on the murderers -going into enough detail on the matter- but rather include plenty new information about the victims, particularly Sharon Tate. He talks about how the events impacted on the victims' families and there also is a part on what happened after the trial to those involved. The majority of the book is about Sharon and her life and showing who she really was, without victimizing her, Hopefully, this book will contribute to her being remembered as a sweet person and then-upcoming actress, and not as a celebrity who met her end by the hands of The Manson Family. Esta es la autobiografía más completa y personal que leí. Lo que más me gustó fue que el lector se puede identificar con Cranston en muchos aspectos de su vida y en varias de sus vivencias (muchas de ellas momentos difíciles). Además me pareció muy interesante el formato de la "historia" porque se puede apreciar cómo un niño rebelde de una familia inestable que pasó por muchas clases diferentes de trabajos logró llegar al estrellato, sin dejar de ser un padre de familia amoroso. ¿Cuál es su secreto? Perseverancia y dedicación. Este libro es para: - Todo aquel que esté interesado en una muy buena autobiografía que no es acartonada, pesada y aburrida como la mayoría. - Personas interesadas en cómo fue la Vida de Bryan Cranston y cómo logró transitar su camino hacia el éxito en Hollywood. - Fans de - Fans of Breaking Bad y/o Malcolm in the Middle (hay algunos datos curiosos y poco conocidos de ambos shows). - Los que disfrutan de lecturas inspiradoras o de leer acerca de alguien que nunca se rindió y siempre persiguió su sueño. - Actores que quieren aprender cómo crear personajes y de qué herramientas deben valerse para  poder lograrlo. What I enjoyed the most about it was the relatability to Cranston's life and struggles the text provides and how it shows his path from a rebel kid from an unstable family circle, to multiple jobs and trades and into a successful actor who is also a loving father and husband. The key to his success in life? Perseverance and hard work. For whom this book is for: - Anyone in the lookout for a great autobiography that doesn't feel stiff and is in no way dragging or boring. - People interested in learning about Bryan Cranston's personal life and his rise into stardom in Hollywood. - Fans of Breaking Bad and/or Malcolm in the Middle (there is considerable insight and  also unknown facts thrown here and there).  - Those who like reading inspirational books or reading stories about not giving up, working hard and following your dreams. - (Aspiring) actors wanting to learn how to build a characters and which tools to use. In conclusion: this book is for anyone looking for an inspiring autobiography about a man who earned his way into Hollywood and how he got there. The Red Ripper - Peter Conradi

Primero abordemos el tema obvio. La foto de tapa es escalofriante, así que se pueden imaginar qué clase de lectura me proporcionó este libro. Esta no es cualquier biografía de un asesino serial porque apunta a explicar y analizar el desarrollo mental de un asesino psicópata. Por supuesto hay un complemento biográfico que detalla la vida de Chikatilo's y la forma en que aterrorizó al sur de Rusia dejando más de 52 víctimas. Comenzó con violando a víctimas pasivas que él sabía no iban a oponer resistencia. Eso desembocó en asesinato, que luego evolucionó a tortura previa a dicho acto. Conradi hizo un gran trabajo para crear un marco de tiempo y espacio a través de detalladas descripciones históricas y culturales. Además, hacia el final del libro se incluye una cronología y una galería de imágenes a modo de resumen escrito y gráfico del relato completo. Este libro se destacó entre otros similares que leí porque se lee como una novela de suspenso basada en hechos reales. Ahora pasamos a la historia.  El primer episodio ocurrió cuando estaba acurrucado con una chica durante una cita. Ella quería librarse de su abrazo pero Chikatilo no la soltaba. Eventualmente la liberó, pero sintió placer por la situación. "Se había formado el primer vínculo peligroso en su subconsciente que unía al disfrute sexual con la violencia física". "Sufrí mucho porque me daba cuenta de que era diferente de todos los demás". "Por desgracia, el trabajo de Chikatilo como maestro de escuela le dio la oprtunidad de materializar sus fantasías sexuales con menores de edad porque ante ellas sentía menos vergüenza que ante adultos".  "La vergüenza que sentía Chikatilo era tan paralizante que lo volvía virtualmente impotente". Cuando atrajo a su primer víctima (una niña de nueve años) a su casa e intentó violarla volvió a surgir su impotencia, pero la aparición de sangre despertó su sed de sangre. Al matarla a puñaladas, el cuchillo se convirtió en un sustituto de su órgano sexual. Cuando la policía lo interrogó por este caso, él ya contaba con antecedentes por abuso de menores en la escuela donde había trabajado anteriormente. No obstante, la policía se concentró en un vecino que ya había recibido una condena por asesinato sexual, y, al final, fue ejecutado por el crimen de Chikatilo. Años más tarde, cuando arrestaron a Chikatilo como sospechoso de asesinato, a pesar de que le encontraron elementos incriminatorios, tuvieron que dejarlo libre. Tuvo la suerte de ser uno de los pocos hombres cuyo grupo espermático no coincide con su grupo sanguíneo. Sus asesinatos se fueron volviendo más crueles con el paso del tiempo. Matar ya no le resultaba suficiente, por lo que comenzó a prolongar e intensificar el sufrimiento de sus víctimas mediante tortura previa al asesinato. Resulta muy interesante cómo lo atraparon porque es recuerda a la forma en que Al Capone cayó por un tema de impuestos. Me molestaron dos cosas de este libro. Una fue la equiparación de la homosexualidad con pedofilia, sadismo y necrofilia. La otra fue el modo condescendiente en que se representa a los discapacitados. Por eso no le doy 4 estrellas. The cover photo alone is terrifying, so you can imagine how the reading experience was. This is a different kind of serial killer book because its main focus is to explain and analyze the mental development of a psychopathic killer. It is of course complemented with a thorough account on Chikatilo's life and how he terrorized the south of Russia, leaving a trail of over 52 victims. He started with violation of   passive victims he knew wouldn't resist. That led to killing and then evolved into torture previous to the murders. A great work has been achieved in framing the time and place of the murders by cultural and historical detailed descriptions. A chronology and an image gallery are also included at the end as a means for summarizing and illustrating all the events. What made this stand out from the other book similar to this one that I've read is the fact that it reads more like thriller based on true events. Now let's talk about the story.  The first episode happened while he was cuddling with a girl during a date. She wanted to break free but Chikatilo wouldn't let her go. He did free her in the end, but experienced pleasure from the situation. "The first dangerous link in his subconscious between sexual enjoyment and physical violence had been made." "I suffered because I realized that I was different from everyone else." "Unfortunately, Chikatilo's work as a schoolteacher gave him the opportunity to develop his own sexual fantasies-sex with underage girls, with whom he felt less shy than adults."  Chikatilo "was so paralysingly shy that it made him virtually impotent." When he lured his first nine-year-old victim into his house and tried to rape her, he found himself impotent again, but it was the sight of her blood that triggered his lust for blood. Stabbing her to death, the knife became a substitute for his sexual organ. When police came to question him, he already had a record as a child molestor from the school where he used to teach, but the police concentrated their attention on a neighbor who had already been convicted for a sex murder and was finally executed for Chikatilo's crime. Years later, when he was arrested as a murder suspect, in spite having incriminating elements, he was freed because he was one of the few men whose sperm group differs from his blood group. His murders were becoming more cruel with the passing of time. He needed to prolong and intensify the suffering of his victims because killing was not enough anymore and he started torturing them. The way he was caught is interesting because it resembles the way Al Capone was caught due to taxes. There were two things that bothered me in this book. One was the comparison of homosexuality to pedophilia, sadism and necrophilia. The other was the condescending way of portraying handicapped people. That's why it didn't get 4 stars. In The Woods (El silencio del bosque) - Tana French

Debo reconocer que, además de haber escuchado hablar de Tana French, me encantó la tapa de este libro cuando lo compré hace unos años. La edición en español es mucho más tenebrosa pero en cuanto al diseño no le llega ni a los talones. Gracias a este libro descubrí a la ilustradora Jennifer Wang (link debajo para que puedan apreciar su trabajo). Hablemos de la historia. A un detective de homicidios se le asigna el asesinato de una joven de 13 años encontrada cerca del bosque. Resulta ser que el detective Ryan creció en el área donde se encontró el cuerpo y no tiene muy buenos recuerdos de ese lugar. Cuando tenía la edad de la víctima, un día salió a jugar en el ese mismo bosque junto a sus dos mejores amigos, pero sucedió algo muy extraño y él fue el único de los tres que apareció con vida. Tenía las zapatillas ensangrentadas y no tenía ni el más mínimo recuerdo acerca de lo sucedido. Adelantemos 22 años hasta el presente. En la escena del crimen aparece evidencia que parece estar relacionada con la desaparición de sus amigos (aunque él es el único que sabe de la conexión).  Este libro se acerca más al suspenso psicológico que al misterio porque nos adentramos en las vidas de los personajes (más específicamente n la mente del Detective Ryan).  Es increíble que este haya sido el primer libro de French porque está muy bien construido. La escritura aporta un ambiente muy atmosférico, y Rob es un personaje con el que el lector se puede identificar fácilmente. Estamos tratando con un policial distinto, porque  ofrece mucho más que los demás. Esto se debe a la humanización del detective como persona y a la representación de la vida y el trabajo de los investigadores de una forma que se sienten reales. Quizás se pregunten "Entonces, ¿por qué le diste solamente 3,5?Bueno, en primer lugar, me resultó un poco repetitivo en ocasiones, y podría haberse ahorrado unas 100 páginas. Segundo, había errores que son una especie de falta de respeto porque justamente conciernen a otras culturas o países. Por ejemplo alguien dice tener primos en "Lyons", Francia, cuando la ciudad se llama "Lyon". Y tercero, el final no me convenció del todo, aunque entiendo a qué apuntaba la autora y qué era lo que quería lograr. Es más, lo logró y está muy bien hecho, pero lamentablemente no es mi estilo porque me quedé con las ganas.  h PERLITA: Hay una situación DEMASIADO parecida a una escena muy importante tanto en el libro La pregunta de sus ojos que Sacheri escribió en el 2005 (éste es del 2007) como en la ganadora del Óscar El secreto de sus ojos. Ahí va la cita: – Jamás en la vida he violado a una chica -refutó Cathal con una desagradable sonrisa-. Nunca lo he necesitado. – ¿Lo ve?, eso es lo que me resulta interesante, Cathal -apuntó Cassie en tono de confidencia-. A mí me parece que usted debía de ser un tipo bastante atractivo. Por eso no puedo evitar preguntarme si es que tiene algún problema con su sexualidad. Ya sabe, a muchos violadores les pasa. Por eso necesitan violar a mujeres: intentan desesperadamente demostrarse a sí mismos que son hombres de verdad, a pesar del problemilla. – Maddox… – Si sabe lo que le conviene -dijo Cathal-, cerrará el pico ahora mismo. – ¿Qué le pasa, Cathal? ¿No se le levanta? ¿Aún no ha salido del armario? ¿No está bien dotado? Si no viste la película NO entres al link porque, como dije, es una escena importante, pero SÍ mirá la película porque es genial. This design was the one  that made me aware of illustrator Jennifer Wang (link below for more of her artwork). Now about the story. A homicide detective starts working on the case of a young girl found murdered near the woods. Detective Ryan also happens to be Adam Ryan, who grew up in the same place where the girl was found. When he was about the same age as her, he and his two best friends went to play in the  same woods, but something dark and strange happened and he was the only one of the three to ever have been found. His shoes were bloody and he had no recollection whatsoever about the events. Forward 22 years toward the present. A piece of evidence is found on the girl's crime scene and it appears to be linked to the disappearance of his friends (but he is the only one aware of that.)  This is much more psychological than mysterious because of the insight we get into the character's lives and especially Detective Ryan's mind.  The construction is great considering this was French's debut novel. The writing is super atmospheric and Rob is such a relatable character. We are definitely dealing with a whodunit that offers much more due to the humanization of the detective profession. This felt like a true depiction of what the life of investigators is like and the process felt realistic. You may be wondering "then, why just 3.5?" Well, in the first place, it felt a bit repetitive and it could have done with about 100 pages less. Second, there were cultural mistakes regarding to the spelling of cities and language that isn't used in Latin America. And third, the ending did not satisfy me, although I understand what Miss French wanted to accomplish and it is really well done, but it just isn't my cup of tea because I didn't get what I was really hoping to get. BONUS: There is a situation that reminds me A LOT of a very important scene both in the 2005 book The Secret In Their Eyes (this one is from 2007) and Oscar winning Argentine movie adaptation. Here's the quote: “I’ve never raped a girl in my life,” Cathal said, with a nasty little smile. “Never needed to.” “See, that’s what’s interesting, Cathal,” Cassie said confidentially. “You look to me like you used to be a pretty good-looking guy. So I can’t help wondering—do you have some problems with your sexuality? A lot of rapists do, you know. That’s why you need to rape women: you’re desperately trying to prove to yourselves that you’re actually real men, in spite of the little problem.” “Maddox—” “If you know what’s good for you,” Cathal said, “you’ll shut your mouth right now.” “What is it, Cathal? Can’t get it up? In the closet? Underendowed?” If you haven't watched it, DON'T click on the link, because it is kind of a spolier. But do watch the movie. It is great. The American version is not bad, but ours is way more real and, besides, it's the original one. Este libro es un 2x1: la historia de Dennis Rader contada por él mismo por un lado y, por el otro,  la investigación y experiencia de la doctora Katherine Ramsland. Los detalles, formato y ritmo de la narración hicieron que casi pudiera ver las imágenes de la historia en mi mente. En este caso la reseña es sobre lo que la coautora denominó una "autobiografía guiada" que le llevó cinco años de investigación y correspondencia con. El asesino BTK (siglas para  su modus operandi de ataduras, tortura y asesinato) pidió comunicarse a través de correspondencia codificada porque "así se sentía más seguro". En realidad, lo que él quería era jugar con el interés de la Dra., tal como lo hacía con las familias de las víctimas y la policía [algo muy similar al Asesino del Zodíaco y a Jack el Destripador]. Ramsland da una muestra del formato de dichos códigos y explica cómo logró descifrarlos. Este libro no describe la investigación policial, los procedimientos ni la perspectiva de las familias de las víctimas. Se enfoca pura y exclusivamente en el relato de Dennis Rader. Nota: voy a transcribir algunas citas del libro para ilustrar de mejor manera mis dichos y  me voy a tomar la libertad de traducirlas (no puedo con mi genio jajaja). Ramsland intercala aclaraciones sobre hechos que Rader distorsiona u omite, pero no altera la narración de él (hasta dejó errores gramaticales) para que el lector pueda experimentar cómo es hablar con él. "Establecimos la importancia de que su voz se escuche como es y no como yo podría hacer que sonara". Para Dennis Rader, personas y situaciones comunes podían tener un doble significado perverso  relacionado al sadomasoquismo y a los asesinatos. Ramsland nos abre la puerta para adentrarnos en la mente de un asesino, su proceso de pensamiento y sus fantasías. Vemos cómo se fue convirtiendo en un asesino y evolucionar como tal. "Él ve el mundo de forma diferente". La más aterrador es que pasó desapercibido como un miembro de la sociedad durante treinta años. Logró llevar una doble vida en la que su amante era el crimen,  al igual que H. H. Holmes [uno de sus principales "modelos a seguir"]. "Superficialmente, todos lo consideraban una buena persona, tal como pasaba con Holmes". Hay algunos bosquejos y dibujos que, curiosamente, demuestran su talento artístico y su mente siniestra al mismo tiempo. Me encantó el recurso de incluir relatos cortos sobre asesinos contemporáneos a Rader para generar una línea del tiempo y, a su vez, demostrar que la policía recién comenzaba a familiarizarse con las estrategias que debían utilizar para atraparlos. Hay muchas similitudes y paralelismos con otros asesinos seriales en los que se inspiró y que estudió. Por ejemplo Ted Bundy y Harvey Glatman. "[...] todos los asesinos seriales [...] tienen una bestia adentro que se alimenta de gente inocente.". El Asesino BTK dice haber intentado luchar contra su impulso pero haber fallado cada vez. La "parte oscura" termina ganando la batalla en algún momento. "Soy una buena persona que hizo cosas malas". Rader quería convertirse en un asesino famoso y soñaba con que se escribiera un libro sobre él como el que Capote escribió sobre Smith & Hickock (A sangre fría) y con este libro su sueño se convirtió en realidad. We have two books in one: 1) Dennis Rader's story told by himself. 2) Dr. Ramsland's investigation and experience. The narration is so detailed, well-crafted and adequately paced that I could almost see the images play out in my mind. In this case we are dealing with a "guided autobiography" that took Ramsland five years. BTK asked to communicate through coded correspondence "for him to feel more secure when telling his story". The truth is he wanted to keep playing games as he did with his victim's families and the police at the time of the murders [Reference to The Zodiac Killer and Jack the Ripper]. Dr. Ramsland shows what the codes looked like and explains how she was able to crack it. This book doesn't describe police investigation and proceedings or the perspective of the victims' families. It is purely focused on portraying Dennis Rader's retelling of the story. Note: I will be providing quotes from the book to better illustrate my sayings. She breaks from Rader's narration to clarify facts he may be distorting or omitting. However, she left his narration untouched (and even left grammatical errors uncorrected) for the reader to experience talking to him. "We discussed the importance of having his voice be what it is rather than what I might make of it." For Dennis Rader, ordinary people and situations have a twisted double meaning related to bondage and killing. Ramsland takes us inside the killer's mind, thought process and fantasies. We see him become a killer and evolve as such. "He sees the world differently." The creepy thing is that he passed as a normal member of society for over 3 decades. He managed to have a double life where his mistress was crime, just like H. H. Holmes [one of his greatest "role models"]. "On the surface, everyone would consider him a good person, as they did with Holmes." "For Dennis Rader, life was good —both of them." "The last part, and most dangerous, is how he can blend into society with no apparent outstanding characteristics. That is what makes a serial killer so dangerous and hard to detect." There are some drawings included that oddly show his artistic talent and disturbed mind at the same time. A great resource used was that of adding accounts about contemporary killers to set a timeline and show that the police were starting to get a grip on the modus operandi necessary to catch them.  There are many similarities and parallelism with other serial killers he was inspired by and studied like Ted Bundy and Harvey Glatman. "[...] all serial killers [...] have an inner beast that devours innocent people." He claims that he tried to fight it but didn't succeed. The Dark Side ends up winning at some point. "I am a good person who did bad things." Rader wanted to be a famous killer and have a book written about him like the one Capote wrote on Smith & Hickock (In Cold Blood) and with this book he got his wish granted.
